SD4 v TD4 MPG Comparison

Having owned a TD4 Auto from 2008 to 2011 and a SD4 Auto from 2012 to present I thought I would share my mpg figures. These are based on business mileage and I always kept a note of the mpg for each trip so the figures are quite comprehensive. Based upon 20000 business miles in the TD4 and 23000 business miles in the SD4 the results are as follows:-

AVERAGE MPG for above mileages
TD4 = 33.8mpg
SD4 = 38.2mpg

BEST MPG ACHIEVED
TD4 = 36.7mpg
SD4 = 44.9mpg

Despite my initial fears that a more powerful engine would mean less mpg in reality the opposite is true! If you can afford it the SD4 is the one to go for. Now - 2017 BMW X3 M Sport Carbon Black
Gone - 2014 BMW X3 M Sport Space Grey, faultless!
Gone - 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Bali Blue with xenons
Gone - 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Rimini Red with bodykit

Hi Shilen

I can confirm the sort of figures you have obtained with your SD4 as the figures I have obtained with my 2011 SD4, just coming up to 3 yrs old, are very similar over the last 55K.

One thing I should point out is that the MY13 updated dash works the mpg computer differently in that when stationary the mpg will reduce whereas on pre-updated dashes the mpg stays constant. Therefore MY13 owners will not get similar readings as I have mentioned.

I've had my SD4 since 1st May. Done 6000 miles. Driven on a range of road types, not all round the town. I don't get anything like those figures.

I think I'm pretty light on the throttle, don't really thrash it. How are you managing it?

I was fairly happy as I'd previously owned an i6 Petrol Freelander (which was very thirsty - 20mpg). Not so happy having read your thread.

Tips and advice to improve consumption gratefully received.

I agree with Shilens findings Thumbs Up

Regularly get between 45 and 49 mpg travelling 180 miles south from Aberdeen, all motorway with speed between 55 and 65 cannot go any faster...... too many speed cameras on M90 Rolling with laughter

Go Shilen go Bow down 'There is thunder' then 'There is the warble of a V8'

SD4 HSE Fuji White (my car): sidesteps, door protection
Golf 2.0 tdi White (wife's car)
Triumph Stag (my 1975 V8 toy - 37,600 miles... Just started its 2nd restoration... had it since 1986)

Tiguan Summit (gone, but nice car)
Porsche Boxster (gone, it was too fast)
SLK (gone, did not like it - lost loads £s)
Discovery Cairngorm (gone,very tractor like)
+ loads of other cars

Driving an auto to get best milage can be a bit of an art and every car is slightly different.

To some point it is just a case of understanding when the vehicle is moving along at the speed you want without having to press down on the accerator, looking well ahead and anticipating the road in front of you.

It's not that hard to do and eventually it becomes the norm. The advatage also is by looking farther ahead and anticipating the conditions ahead you should be driving more safely.

I did read an article some time back that it was harsh braking, not accerating, that can adversly affect mpg.

My SD4 seems to be giving better mileage the more miles go on the clock and it wasn't until gone 20K miles that I noticed the engine 'loosening up' and the mpg start to gradually improve.

With the fact of having to fill up from almost empty every 5-7 days and the pump getting closer and closer to that magic £100 mark my right foot seems to have gion very light these days.

With all that I wouldn't change my FL2 and worth every penny.

There is loads of stuff on the net about hypermiling - the art of getting the best fuel economy.

I'm getting a max of 33MPG on the SD4 so far. After 20-22 from the Td5 disco, and allowing for getting a bigger grin from the 'vroom' factor, I'm not complaining about that. The computer seems to be about 1MPG better than the fill-to-fill measurement on the first check. It is interesting to see how high I can get it while still enjoying the acceleration.

The tips that make sense to me is to not worry too much about accelerating up to speed, stick to the speed limit, and try to keep your speed steady. Also backing off early can mean you travel longer at the magic 99.9 and get to the obstruction going faster than if you braked harder and later - and never have your foot on the accelerator if you can see red lights in front!
