Looking to buy a LR2

Hi Guys,

First and foremost: I am in the market for a new LR2.

I love the way it looks, think the interior is great for the price and love its capabilities.

The LR2 is going to be for the missus, so I need to make sure there are no issues (or I will end up having to give up my car - a BMW 335, to her if things go really bad).

I know Land Rovers have had quite a few reliability issues.

The question is: What are the common problems with the LR2? What spec should I get (We plan to use it for some softcore off-roading)? And Finally Are you happy with it?

Thanks in advance.

Romania 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Izmir Blue

Welcome on the forum Thumbs Up

Very happy with mine
Might want to check this thread http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic1947.html
As you might have seen here the FL2 has very little reliability issues. Just top of my had would mention:
- sunroof recall for models till 2008
- very few problems with the remote/ stsrting
- one clutch and one gear box problem -that I am aware of
- front passanger door not openning from the inside - think two mentioned
- few satnav and radio problems
- a couple of flat batteries - but seems they were due to the car not having been locked with the remote (as this is the only way to put the car's electronics to sleep)
Can't really think of anything else but probably nothing else worth mentioning.
As for the spec? Depends on your wallet really.
Higher the spec more goodies the thinner your wallet gets.
You might want to go for something else than the HSE and add other extras than the ones that come with the HSE. HSE is brilliant if you can afford. FREELANDER 2 TD4 SE (XS UK) IZMIR BLUE SIDE STEPS COLD PACK BI-XENON TINTED WINDOWS - AND PROUD OF HER

Australia 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Zermatt Silver

I've had mine since Christmas, no reliability problems and for 95% of the time I prefer to drive it rather than our other car, a BMW 330!

Also, give the Auto box some thought, its great! All of the instructors at the LRE day I did said the Auto's the best bet on and off road.

Absolutely right.

After driving the FL2 I drove again my 407 (cannot compare to a 330 but still..) before selling her and could not find an easy driving posiyion and everything reallyseemed out of place. The FL2 is such an easy car to love and drive.
I allways preffered manual boxes bt after all I have read on this forum I am not so sure anymore as the auto box ooks great even if the mpg is a bit higher. The drive test car had an auto but at that time (and even now) I think I made the best choice from what the dealer had on offer. Maybe next tim. Who knows. FREELANDER 2 TD4 SE (XS UK) IZMIR BLUE SIDE STEPS COLD PACK BI-XENON TINTED WINDOWS - AND PROUD OF HER

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I have always been a Landy fan.

A year ago I was thinking about the LR3 or Range Rover Sport but decided not to buy one as I heard there are serious reliability issues with both.

Instead I test drove and ended up falling in love with the BMW 335 coupe - ridiculously fast, comfortable and good looking.

Now, the missus wants to replace her 307cc. She is willing to pay upto 40K pounds for a good car. She is on and off about Landys. So the deal with her is that she will buy the LR2 as long as it doesn't break down like other Landys.

If it does, I have to give up my car to her (which she loves and already finds every opportunity to take it) permanently.

We are gonna go test drive it tomorrow.

Thanks for the heads up on the issues. I have been reading up on the LR2 for the past 2 weeks and seems like it has the same issues that any other car does.

I can't believe that someone would prefer driving a LR2 to a BMW.

The LR2 must be something...... I just hope it drives as well as it looks.

p.s: How good is it off road? I am a novice at driving off road and would like a SUV that would make it to the remote beaches and across river beds.

I have had my FL2 since October
In that time it has been in the Dealers several time for reliability issues and for warranty issues, the car has had problems with the engine Big Cry , the fuel system Big Cry , the central locking Big Cry , the rear headrest screens Big Cry (still to be fixed), the electric seats Big Cry and the facia vents Big Cry . At 4000 Banging Head , 5000 Banging Head and 6000 Banging Head it was transported to the dealer. Do I like the car.

Love it Bow down I just think I got a rouge one its build date was a Friday so maybe there is truth in the Friday Car

United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Tambora Flame

Had ours since Jan (1 year old ex demo) and its been back for a spurious warning popping up on the display from time to time (software fix). Other than that, there is an issue with the fuel gauge sticking on 0 when its very low (but not 0) and the recall for the sunroof but neither are worth the drive to the dealers for so they can wait for the next service. In terms of reliability, she's been fine. Starts first bash of the key, locks and unlocks on the button, nothing's fallen off, broken or malfunctioned. Given that ours would have been one of the first built, I expected a few niggles they seem to have had the LR2 pretty well sorted from the start.
Sure there will be rogues but there are people with rogues from pretty much every manufacturer, inc BMW, Merc and even lexus.
On my experience, if your concern is reliability and you're buying an 08 model I wouldn't give it another thought.
In terms of models, the more toys the better. I stoppped at the SE and it has most things. We figured we could live without the few extra toys in the hse. Ride and handling are a revelation - almost GTI style so I can understand people using it in preference to other high-end motors. I'm not saying I'd swap the merc for it but if I had to, I wouldn't cry into my beer either. Its a very good car. 07 Freelander 2 TD4SE Tambora Flame, side steps, privacy glass, mud flaps, boot liner and a tow bar. Ok it's the Wifes but she lets me drive it occasionally - if I've been good!

Sounds like the car is well sorted.

Over here in dubai they are offering a 5year 250,000Km warranty along with it. Which is great.

We are heading out for the test drives tomorrow - shortlisted cars are the LR2, X3, XC90 and the FX35.

Hope the missus likes the LR2 - I would love to get one (am already planning some off-roading trips).

To be honest its partly novelty value, the 330 is my 3rd straight BMW and the Freelander is just so different, obviously its nowhere near as quick but I find it more comfortable and definately more relaxing to drive, maybe I'm getting old Crying or Very sad

I do still enjoy a blast in the BM though!

Hope you enjoy whatever you end up with.

I bet you will had to persuade her to like the LR as it’s really a mans car, although my wife loves it and she agreed 100% with the choice as well (but then I didn’t let her try the X3) Laughing .

I think the XC90 is the most practical of the bunch to own, especially if you transport 4+ people regularly on long journeys and is the best sexless 4x4. But they just can’t compare with the Norwegian winter capabilities of the LR, Thumbs Up - I know I have tried in my mountain playground.

The X3 is the one most women here in Norway would choose, purely for the snob value, but they don’t know nuffing about the mechanics of 4x4’s, it’s just the badge, colour and SUV-status they are interested in (most are blonds here anyway). Rolling Eyes

The FX35 looks pretty, but I don’t know anything about it – isn’t it just a crossover Question

You will end up with the FL2, especially if your budget allows you all the extras Thumbs Up – they are expensive but certainly the best of the bunch. Thumbs Up When I tried the FL2 for the first time – I wanted it, but couldn’t afford it Embarassed , but the second time I tried it (after a couple of bank jobs) Whistle , I bought it, and it’s been fantastic to drive, love and cherish ever since. I have not had any issues with the FL2 at all. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

ps - I do not work for LR 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.
Stornoway Grey with Ebony Black Pleather, Clear Indicators, Body Side Mouldings etc.

We already have one Bimmer so I am hoping this will be enough to not get another one.

We don't transport many people around town - mainly 2-3 every couple of weeks. The main reason for the 4x4 is that with the 3 series coupe and the 307cc the options are limited when the weekend comes along. We can't head out into the desert or the mountains.

I did try take the 3 series onto some sand once - about 10 feet off the beach road. And got stuck promptly. Ended up waiting till 4 in the morning to get it out. and it was new year's as well. Will never forget that night.
