Gutted :(

I was out in my new to me, spotless, shiny Freelander on Sunday (well, OK, it wasn't spotless or shiny as it was raining all day and I was out delivering blood) when I heard something hit the windscreen. It's left a minuscule chip in it but what I'm really gutted about is where it bounced off the middle of the bonnet first and has left the ugliest stone chip.

I'm wondering what to do about it. I know if I go anywhere near it with touch up paint, polish or anything DIY I'll end up with something looking twenty times worse and so I wondered if anyone has any suggestions or recommendations especially of these mobile chip repair companies?

Thanks

United Kingdom 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto Baltic Blue

I had a similar experience 3 years ago, with a Waterworld Blue Insignia. Took advice from 2 different Bodyshops, and both said the same - because of the location of the scratch, it would take a major area of respray to make it look "right", owing largely to the colour. It's not like you can "feather in" paint and lacquer in that area. Given that Baltic Blue is an almost identical LR equivalent, I would be highly surprised if it could be S.M.A.R.T. repaired without looking rubbish.

Let us know how it pans out for you. Foraging near Gaydon....

So perhaps I'll have to go for the large bonnet decal after all? Gah, I hope not. Fortunately I've just discovered I can't see it clearly from the driving seat, so at least I'm not being tortured.

If you find a good body shop it can be blended in.

My (now gone) Kosrae Green got chipped in the highlands by a numpty in a 38 tonner who didn't slow down growing through a patch of road that had been planed (and clearly said 20mph limit). My local dealer in Stirling has their own body shop and one of the guys is a real whizz with spray gun and they did the whole job for less than my insurance excess! My suggestion is hunt around DaveBee

Well, I had a chap from Chips Away call round tonight and he said that while it had not gone through to the metal he could not repair it so that it would be invisible. I'm grateful for his honesty and so it looks as though I'm on the hunt for a really good body shop.

Anyone know anywhere in the south east?

DaveBee - I used to know a guy who worked for chipsAway and as a rule they won't touch bonnets or roofs. Good luck with your search Smile

United Kingdom 2013 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto Santorini Black

My previous freelander got peppered after a recent local resurfacing and an idiot in a Merc.

In the short term I ended up buying turtle wax (yes, James with turtle wax) black chip stick. Filled all the chips, then waxed over the top to seal in. I too was gutted but.....inevitably you will get more of the little gits as time goes on. The chip stick did a very good job of taking the edge of the noticeable chips.

My advice would be to 'fill' / protect the chip, with either Bilt Hamber Autobalm, or a chip stick (coloured) and await more of them! Maybe once you get a 'few' a respray may be more viable on the pocket rather than a repair for a single blemish.

.....the only other highly rated option that seems to pop up on detailing world, is a paint kit from 'paints4u' as they do a stone chip repair kit with application spears rather than the crap lid brush.

http://www.paints4u.com/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=6930 this is the basic kit.

Hope this helps,

I was thinking of Chips Away for some stone chips on my bonnet, do not think I will bother now if in his opinion they would not be invisable.
