Just had a flyer through the door from the local councillors. They are asking for people thoughts on making the residential areas and around schools 20mph zones. Does anyone live in such a zone? The area where I live has recently been "converted" to 20mph.

Whilst I do not have enough information to comment as to whether such a reduction in speed limit does reduce road casualties, what I CAN say is that I have not seen ANYONE respect the new limit. Even public service vehicles such as buses and bin lorries do not observe the limit.

Equally, I have never seen any kind of enforcement by either the Safety Camera Partnership nor the police - and because of that, people flout the limit. QED.

We had a similar marketing campaign by the sandal wearing, "knit your own bicycle" brigade, trying to convince everyone that it was a brilliant idea.

I, personally, didn't have any strong feelings either way.

It is interesting now (approximately 3-4 months after the change) how unpopular it is; to the extent where the local rag is now publishing articles stating what a "really bad idea" it is. This is the same local rag that was extolling its virtues this time 3-4 months ago.......go figure.....

Normal drivers might. Yobs don't and neither do Audi drivers. Audi drivers seem to think they are superior drivers and their cars are superior. I saw an A6 Avant doing about 40 near a school recently. Driver was Mr Cool with his sunglasses

We have a 20mph limit on a half mile stretch in front of our primary and secondary school, nearly all ignore it but never seem to exceed 30mph whereas when it was a 30 most did 40

I'm a bus driver and will admit to going over the 20. We take a hammering from the locals as it's only bus drivers that do it rubbish. When the schools are out I drop to 20 any other time it's 30, the area has always been 30 with no one being run over or any form of accidents.

If you think it is a good idea then support it. An stick to the limit yourself.
Doesn't matter whether all people stick to it or not.... They do so at their own risk and without the limit in place action cannot be taken against them.

I suspect most people slow down to some extent - even if it is still above the limit. So they may drive a little slower in a 20 than a 30. And many will obey the limit so overall it will have some effect.

Agree that is isn't JUST the bus drivers round where I am. Nobody sticks to the 20mph limit - not Audi, BMW or any other make....no-one.

Not even the people who I know for a fact had the "20 is plenty..." posters in their front windows campaigning for the change.

I am in no way judging. It's up to individuals to decide whether to obey a speed limit or not - I just find it so odd that after all the hoo-ha to have the limit changed, no-one obeys it - seemingly without penalty.

That said, I do tend to agree with the earlier posts......people now only tend to do 30mph, whereas before some people were touching 40mph.

Perhaps the police/SCP view this as a "win", and so tend to leave it to self police?

Every road round here seems to be a twenty or a speed reduction... No warning either.

That and the speed cams = chaos as people have no idea what speed to do so end up doing 20 any way even on big roads.

There is only one way a 20mph limit gets observed and that's when they install average speed cameras on the road. Works a treat in a couple of areas where this has been done a few miles from where I live and on motorway roadwork areas of course.
With no fear of prosecution the average (appalling) standard of driving will apply. On my road (30mph) cars have been clocked at over 70mph and 40mph to 50mph is a daily occurence. 2 schools on a suburban residential road but hey ho.

The lower limit is there for a good reason; respect it. The next village along the coast from us, St. Agnes, has a 20 and we have one just outside the local primary school. Some stick to it, some don't. It has made a difference and hopefully that will grow.

For heaven's sake, guys, it doesn't matter what the others do. If it's a 20 limit then YOU stick to it. Take responsibility for your own actions and let others do the same. Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto
