Depends on the profile of the tyres. If the correct profile for the rim the overall diameter of the wheel should be the same.

Most of my cars/vans seem to wear the outside edge of the front nearside tyre. I also believe it's to do with the number of roundabouts and traffic islands that are imposed on us. Perhaps a poll is called for?

My near side front tyre is also wearing on the outside edge. Had the tracking etc checked, and all perfect. Tyre fitter said it was roundabouts!

I think I will swap the front wheels over.

Might I also suggest that a driver's ability to corner properly will also affect tyre wear.

In a nutshell: How many times have you heard someone say 'they must have lost it on the bend'?

To reduce tyre wear, especially on the edges and to corner more effectively, take the widest route/line around a bend as this means that the wheels require less turn in/ rotation of steering wheel and are therefore travelling in a straighter direction. Because the tread blocks are effectively under less cornering 'stress', the car will be better balanced ie cornering forces balanced on both outer wheels and not just the front corner (which in a fwd car will also be driving the wheels), the tyres will have more capacity to grip and will therefore be more able to travel around the bend faster. Thus the driver will be cornering not only more efficiently but possibly faster too!

Eh? Do you go round roundabouts anti clockwise when going home then? Even going straight on at a ROUNDabout involves extra loading/scrubbing/wear/travel to the nearside wheels. Just how do the offside tyres get equal wear? Your very first post on this forum in reply to a post I made gave me reason then to suspect you know very little about tyres.

ME: I have an HSE with 18" alloys but the spare is a brand new, unused (so I'm assuming this was supplied with the car) 17" steel wheel.

YOU: Sorry for not introducing myself first, but can this be correct? Surely you can't run on a 17" spare with 18" wheels on the car. Would it not put a huge strain on the rear diff if on the back or on the Haldex?

Your most recent post now confirms my suspicions. Guess you wouldn't even make the grade as a tyre monkey. Laughing

Thanks, hope you feel better for getting that of your chest.

Actually, as someone who works closely with those you snottily refer to as 'tyre monkeys', I do. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
