Private Plate on new car

my wife is changing her Toyota iq for a new Maxda which will take about 2 weeks to be delivered.

the dealer has suggested putting her private plate on retention and the new car will have a 63 registration.

then when all the documents are through he will fit the private plates. ( approx 4 weeks )

the dealer said that at the present there are massive delays with the DVLA and this is the best way to do the change over ?

in the past we have always just had the private plate done straight away at the time of sale by the dealer with no problems.

anyone have any knowledge or comment on what the dealer is proposing ?

thanks

Iain

ps the dealer said they would do all the necessary paperwork and it will cost me £105 for the retention fee.

No problems, it will ease the sale instead of waiting for the plate transfer, dvla seem to get slower and slower. in the past I have put my plate on retention prior to the sale, so dealer can put my plate on the car quickly and easily.

The main problem here is the use of non British cars, not even european Rolling Eyes At work

It has absolutely nothing to do with the fact it is a non British car.

Your dealer is right about the DVLA. The 1st March and 1st September is always slow due to the new reg coming out.

But the main reason things have gone so slow is because the DVLA has closed most of its local offices with the rest to close any time soon, and everything is done now by Swansea.

It makes no difference to the dealer whether it is a private plate or a new plate if the number is on retention, but can take a few extra days for a transfer.

But, in my opinion it is always better to have a new car on a non private plate when first registered as all the service book and associated paperwork carries this number.

Then when you sell the car, it gets its original number back and there is no trace that a private was ever on it. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

thanks guys, really what you are saying agrees with what the dealer is telling me.

he wants the V5 and MOT for the old car, so I'll take it in this week, but I was thinking that won't hold up the new car anyway ?

Private reg transfers are a real mess at the moment. It's just taken more than 3 weeks for Swansea to process a transfer from retention onto a vehicle for my brother-in-law. Last time it just took a 15 minute visit to the local DVLA office.

The BBC carried a news story on it last week.....

I imagine things are only going to get worse once all the local offices fully close later this year.

from what you guys are saying I may leave it on retention for a while till things calm down a bit !!

but the strange thing is I now don't like the idea of driving around with a 63 registration, much rather have the personal plate.
