Tyre noise?

...

I'm on a set of Goodyear Wranglers, done 26,000 miles. Lately I've noticed very noticeable tyre squeal in a couple of local car parks particularly, when VERY slowly cornering in the car park (& I mean slowly - under 5mph). It's only recently started happening and doesn't at normal road speed / cornering speed There's still a decent amount o tread on all tyres, at least 2mm above legal limit.

Any significance? It sounds like an episode of 'The Dukes of Hazzrard' when, in reality, we're just pootling very gently in a local car park... Confused

Worn out tyres. Ran my Continental 4x4 Contacts down to below 4mm and they became unstable in the wet, ice and snow. Changed to new ones at 26000 miles and the difference was amazing. Personally I'd be looking to change 4x4 tyres before they get down to 3mm rather than 1.6mm as they are carrying more weight.

In Alpine Regions you can only use All Season Tyres in Winter with a minimum of 4mm of tread remaining.

Thanks for these thoughts...Hmmmm thought it might be ID'd as worn tyres... but the tyres are well legal. I don't feel any loss of grip or control, so the squeal is the only symptom.
What's the consensus from the forum on changing to new tyres? I've probably got another 1 or poss 2 mm to go before they are no longer legal.
What tread depth do others on the forum change at? And anyone else experienced this squeal & fixed it with new tyres?

**EDIT** Just measured tread depth with an accurate gauge... 2.8-4.0 mm on both fronts, 4.0-5.0 mm on both rears.

Just noticed the same noise on mine in the last couple of weeks , turning slowly into certain car parks , car done 24000 and Wranglers down to approx 4.5mm allround .
I am planning on putting new winter tyres on at the end of Oct and looking at the tyres they prob would be good for few months next spring/summer .
I have always changed at 3mm in the past .

In the old days, I am talking 1986 here, any squealing of the type you mentioned would have resulted in me being told to go and put some air into the tyres.

I am sure you have checked but it was often a sign of low pressure.

I got it on my Continentals in Tesco car park, oh and Homebase, think it must be the type of tarmac they use, very smooth, my tyres were low but you could still make out there was a tread of sorts.
New tyres stopped the noise.

At work we run Disco's and Shoguns and they both do it at low speed in car parks. It's weather related only happens in hot weather. Tyre pressure checked daily and wear rarely gets below 4mm. Audi A4 Avant 2.0 tdi 05 Liquid Blue

On the classic RR it was caused by a seize up of the diff's
Worth checking before buying new tyres.
