Towbar ECU Coding

Morning all,

Now we are into the camping season I'm getting a Witter detachable swan neck fitted so i can take the bikes. Looking to get a buzz rack cycle carrier @ £150.

i'm having single 7 pin fitted for the rack lights, now, what's this awful rumour I've heard about needing to get LR to code the ECU when there is a towbar fitted??

Is this just for autos/parking sensors and/or 13 pin?? I've got none of those Whistle

***UPDATE****
Basically, I'm having a right nightmare!!

I'm wanting a Witter detachable swan neck fitted to my 2013 Black Edition.

- A well recommended mobile fitter has quoted £314 with a vehicle specific harness from 'right connections.co.uk' but they don't do the ECU programming or coding and locally I'm not aware of anyone who does. Will this cause me issues?

- Witter want £439 for the same, but nearest is 25 miles anyway. But I assume they would code?

- Land Rover want £768 coded haha!!

Hi,

Just had a Whitter tow bar fitted this morning! Using a Witter dedicated wiring kit (not cheap but essential, I think), everything worked correctly before the re-programming. This they couldn't do at my home for some reason so I followed them back to their unit for that part. The only immediate difference was the rear parking sensors are disabled when the tow bar plug is in use and the trailer indicator on the dashboard shows indicators are working correctly.....but there may be other features, (maybe rear fog lights disabled?) not sure yet!

Swan neck detachable type......looks the 'business' too! Kola is the big solid black German Shepherd, Dobbie is.......a breed you've never heard of......yet;)

Thanks for the reply! So did you have some re coding via ECU or was it just the veh specific wiring that did the business??

I'm thinking with bike carrier I'm not going to need a re code, but wasn't sure it was essential!!

I haven't got parking sensors and its manual gearbox!!

Hi,

As I stated, I had both done! That is dedicated wiring and ecu programming (mine is also a manual)

When they plugged in the code reader/programmer unit, it requested the vehicle VIN number so I guess whatever gets change is vehicle specific.

Hope this helps Kola is the big solid black German Shepherd, Dobbie is.......a breed you've never heard of......yet;)

Just had a mobile fitter (family member) to fit me a Tow Trust detachable towbar with 13 pin electrics to my MY12 HSE manual. Put the 40A block fuse in the boot fuse box and use a 13 pin to twin 7 pin adapter lead as my caravan has 7 pin electrics. connected up, all working ok, no programming required as far as I can see, really neat job and looks smart. If anyone needs a mobile fitter in the Midlands area, he is a family member and would be happy to forward anyone on to him if required.
Do not understand why programming is needed unless it is for the LR dedicated wiring only? 2011 XS SD4, Indus Silver (Getting to love it more and more)

Just checked fog lights work ok, so as far as I can see, all is good to go.
Taking the van to Dollgellau next week, so will get a proper run out then. 2011 XS SD4, Indus Silver (Getting to love it more and more)

I see. however, do not see this as an issue as would not be much point in using rear fogs with the van attached, other than giving the front on the van a nice glow! 2011 XS SD4, Indus Silver (Getting to love it more and more)

A few years ago I had a towbar fitted by the dealer to a Passat and when I collected the car the service book was on the seat with a sticker attached indicating that chances had been made to either the traction/stability programmes, maybe things are changed that arn't immediately apparent.

Martinbcfc,
rear fog lights on a caravan are a legal requirement ( apart from very, very old vans). Reversing lights are a nice to have, not required. FL2 2007 57 GS
