Golf

Just started getting into golf. Watched it for ages but never played properly despite being a regular visitor to the holy grail that is St Andrews over the years. Got myself set up with a used set of budget brand clubs including a bag, trolley, range finder, umbrella, shed load of balls & tees and some shoes (not used) for £100.

Played the 9 hole tower course at Morley Hayes yesterday which is the first time I have ever played properly. With max handicap taken into account, I finished 7 over. This is horrific at face value but not bad for a first ever go. Going to get a coaching session soon but I really want to buy a beast of a driver...

Any of you guys play? If so, any tips?

What brand of clubs do you use? LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

I've got a mixed set of clubs collected over a couple of years - Taylor Made woods, old Callaway irons, Titleist Vokey wedges and an Odyssey putter. All good quality stuff, mostly bought pre-used but some presents from kindly family. I only started playing when I retired seven years ago so I'll never be a Justin Rose but I thoroughly enjoy the game and play two or three times a week.

Tips - get some lessons, join a local club and buy your clubs and balls via eBay after going to your local American Golf shop to see what you like and trying out a few. Get some good Goretex waterproofs. Don't be tempted to buy new, at least while you're learning. Second-hand stuff is plenty good enough and FAR cheaper. Golf shops are like fishing shops - out to catch the unwary.

Get out there and enjoy yourself but be warned - golf is HIGHLY addictive and doesn't mix well with motorcycling, green laning or fishing! Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto

Noodle Ice balls eh Taz? That nice pastel pink colour?

I use the standard Noodles, bought as pearl quality Lake balls off eBay for about 40 pence each. I like to use the same balls 'cos I reckon it's better for putting, with the same consistent feel off the clubhead every time. I'm not a good enough golfer (HC 28 ) to benefit from high-price compound balls and at around £3 a go for good new balls an average week would cost me more in balls than it does in club membership! Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto

Temptation got the better of me! I just bought a PING G20 driver on eBay for £100. Saved a bit off the new price in the shops and it is highly rated as a game improver for high handicap golfers. Should be here before my next visit to the driving range on Thursday and the 9 hole course again on Friday.

Here it is at American Golf: http://www.americangolf.co.uk/PING/Ping-G2...GB,pd.html LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Nice Driver Mr. Green

Seriously though Doc, the only game improver is lessons.

Give a set of crap clubs to a good golfer they will still have a good round, give a set of " game changers" to a noob and you may enjoy it but your score will be the same.

Rolling with laughter

Not quite there yet. LPC kicks off mid September and includes studies of solicitors accounts and taxation so that might send me running for the hills yet Laughing

As for lessons Taz, I have emailed a local guy who charges £35 for an hours coaching but he's not got back to me yet. My brother in law who played the course with me on Friday has been giving me some tips and I've been looking online for guidance. I'm much better than I was a few weeks ago.

To be honest I do like PING clubs and couldn't resist buying the driver when I saw it. Hit it bang on with that and it's going to go zooming down the fairway Very Happy LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

For those wanting Golf lessons, check with your local Golf Club Pro, as they often do small group lessons, which work out much cheaper!

I walked of my golf course 6 years ago, and clubs went in the corner of the garage! Not been touched since, except for oiling them regularly. I only gave up as the arthritis in my hands and feet just became too much. Funnily enough I do not miss it at all. I also find I have much more time to do other things now!

I have a Fraser electric golf trolley which I am just about to advertise if anyone is interested. 1998 300TDi Auto Disco, never to be forgotten.
