HSE Rear Brakes

Has anybody seen this before?





The rear pads and/or discs appear to be the wrong size! The rust ring at the top and bottom is roughly 5mm wide. The pads are Mintex I think not sure about the discs. The FL2 is a used approved and has presumably been thoroughly checked over (I've only had it 2 weeks!!!). I'm a little OCD about my cars and brakes in particular so I think I will change the pads to Land Rover ones. The discs have no obvious lip to them so are presumably fairly new. Do you think this would be covered by the used approved warranty?

How old are the pads ? New ones have a bevelled edge and wont cover the whole disc for a while.

That may explain it-the discs look fairly new and there is no obvious lip. Assuming the pads were replaced at the same time they may not be that old. Many thanks for your help.

5mm sounds excessive, I would have expected about 1.5mm for inner and outer rust rings on a 'new' disc, more as the disc gets old.
Changing for other pads is unlikely to be successful. When steel degrades to rust there is a radical change in molecular construction to the new compound that we all call rust, The new compound when dry is very skin hard, (harder than steel); it will just cut radial grooves in the new pads. You would have to remove all the existent rust back to clean steel before fitting new pads.
New pads have chamfered leading and trailing edges; not the inner and outer radii.
I rather think that you leave well alone unless really convinced that the braking is defective.

Many thanks for your advice. What you have said makes sense so I will leave replacing the pads. Braking seems ok but the rears are not producing much in the way of brake dust. That may be down to the type of pads fitted. New discs and pads (Land Rover) were fitted to the front by the supplying dealer and the alloys are significantly "dirtier" with brake dust. The handbrake seems to function as it should though.

Mine are exactly the same. They are Mintex discs and pads and they were fitted a couple of thousand miles ago. Seems perfectly normal to me. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

I'm no expert on Freelander 2's but I'm pretty sure that the handbrake operates brake shoes within the rear discs and not the rear brake pads.

Also I would expect the front brakes would do a higher percentage of the braking than the rears do Black FL2

Yes tha Handbrake is by shoes and not the pads.
The rear pads are relatively small and is not unheard of to wear out before the fronts even though a higher percentage of braking is done by the fronts. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior
