Can't remember having the same rust rings on my last one-maybe it's old age! |

How old are the pads ? New ones have a bevelled edge and wont cover the whole disc for a while. |

That may explain it-the discs look fairly new and there is no obvious lip. Assuming the pads were replaced at the same time they may not be that old. Many thanks for your help. |

5mm sounds excessive, I would have expected about 1.5mm for inner and outer rust rings on a 'new' disc, more as the disc gets old.

Many thanks for your advice. What you have said makes sense so I will leave replacing the pads. Braking seems ok but the rears are not producing much in the way of brake dust. That may be down to the type of pads fitted. New discs and pads (Land Rover) were fitted to the front by the supplying dealer and the alloys are significantly "dirtier" with brake dust. The handbrake seems to function as it should though. |

Mine are exactly the same. They are Mintex discs and pads and they were fitted a couple of thousand miles ago. Seems perfectly normal to me. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

I'm no expert on Freelander 2's but I'm pretty sure that the handbrake operates brake shoes within the rear discs and not the rear brake pads.
