Santorini Black - cleaning and keeping it clean.

Hi all,

just acquired my first Freelander, an HSE 12 plate which looks stunning in Santorini Black. Just been machine polished and I have added some poorboys natty blue wax and will top off with EX P sealant. Decided to do it this way rather than pay the £399 + VAT that the dealer wanted for Supaguard treatment. I am new to this sort of cleaning level, but results so far look great. What I need now is some tips on how to keep it this way. how often should I be polishing / waxing / sealing? Are there better products than I have used ( without breaking the bank!) and is the method I have followed the best way or is there another order that is better or more effective.
Looking forward to first towing trip with the caravan to North Wales week after next to see the comparison between this and the Honda CRV diesel it has just replaced.

I agree with the (non) use of supragard. Had it done on my last kosrae green FL2 and it didn't really seem to offer any benefit over normal shampoo and polish.

My Santorini Black XS now gets a regular weekly wash with Meguiars Ultimate Wash & Wax. It produces a great finish with little effort and 'beads' well in the rain. It made me smile the other week when the car was in the dealers the other week for warranty work and they asked me what I was using on it as the bodywork had such a good gloss!

PS good soft Scottish water probably also helps!

turtle wax , 'wax it wet' spray on wet car after washing and towel off, sounds a bit naff but works a treat, no water marks and a good shine, do windows as well leaves them spotless.

but... its hard to get hold of now .Im sure other brands do a similar towel dry polish At work

I use the werkstat 'glos' just after a wash, can be applied wet and towel dried.
It's not a polish or wax, simply a polymer sealant but works wonders and is fast and easy to use Thumbs Up

Never, never, ever, use a sponge.
Never let anyone else clean your car, not even the dealer.
Powerwash, at least two buckets, grit guard, top quality mitt and drying cloth are the basic requirements to keep the swirls at a minimum. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Thanks all for the advice.
The nattys blue wax is really easy to put on and buff off, so quite happy to continue with that every few weeks if it gives the results it has to date, but if i feel lazy, I like the idea of a quick spray on and towel off wax if I can find some. - starts internet search Thumbs Up

I used to take my car down to the hand car wash where they do a good job, but after hearing what you guys do I though I would give it a try. I use the 2 bucket method, microfibres cloths, and a squeegee. Going to attempt at waxing it before the summers over as I'm not too keen at washing it when the weather turns cold!

And if you've been taking your car to the hand car wash, I wouldn't at all be surprised if the damage is already done.
I've watched them do it and they don't rinse out the mitt frequently enough, meaning they massage you car's paint with fine grit Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

I watched my local, put their mitts chami leathers on the dirty concrete floor and jet wash them clean, or I put it, blast a load of grit deep into their cloths Shocked Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Big Cry Now I find out they have been damaging my cars for years. Big Cry

Thanks for the info Nick, but I will continue to use it as the water in my area is very hard and it leaves streaks if I use a microfibres cloth only. Sad I make sure the squeegee is cleaned properly before and during use. Thumbs Up

I use Poorboys World QD+ to sort watermarks. Failing that Chris, just use a decent drying towel, washing your car when it's cool?

In reply to the OP, I use Poorboys Black Hole quite often, topped with Bilt Hamber Finis Wax, then Poorboys QD+ after every wash. keeps it very nice. 2013 FL2 - Black Edition Auto
