Fuel economy

This thread started by saying 'I know the engines changed' between 2010 - 2011 years.
I really would like LR to clarify.
I bought the replacement engine for my 2010 spec car via eBay and it was sold to me as a lab test engine. It turned out to be a 2011 development engine with lab sensors all over it, mechanically the core engine was identical to the one in mine. The engine was a 190 model for which the inlet and exhaust manifolds were a bit different and the turbo was 20% bigger.
I transferred all manifolds and ancillaries from my original engine to ensure compatability with my software setup
Quite how 2011 cars are more efficient is a mystery.
If its all down to software please Mr Landrover can you make the upgrade software available to all of us pre 2011 owners so we can all benefit from better MPG
Regards to all from Fred

As I have stated elsewhere there are also many other variables with mpg comparisons, including tyres (do not underestimate the impact of rolling resistance), weight carried, fuel quality, driving style to name just a few. As an example on my A2 the difference between tyres varied by 5 mpg (9%) between best (Continental) /worst (Falken). eh tu?

For what it's worth, this might be a bit of interesting reading in regards to the improved 2011 engine.

A bit of an update. We ended up saving some cash and went for an Approved Used 57 reg TD4 HSE Freely in Rimini Red. We've been seriously impressed with the mileage we've been getting out of it. My wife's daily commute across London is costing us only 32 mpg. I had it up at over 40 for a while shortly after refuelling and resetting on the M25 at 70. For that same 32mpg drive, our X5 did about 22 and the Mini Cooper S about 24/5. Very impressed. I'm so surprised at how good it is that I wonder if the previous owner got the car remapped and Landrover didn't know about this when they sold it to us!

Just as an add on to my previous reply...
I replaced my wrecked 2010 engine with a 2011 spec engine. The mechanical difference I spotted was the bigger turbo with water cooled centre bearing and the plastic inlet manifold was without swirl flaps / actuator. Technically the injectors had a different part number and there was extra sensors on the exhaust.
I have discussed matters with a diesel development man of a major earthmoving machinery maker, he informed me that its all down to the greater precision in fuel metering required by the later EU emissions regulations.
I just refitted my original ancillaries to ensure compatibility with the control electronics.

Haha, anyone expecting manufacturer stated mpg from a vehicle is a fool. In my experience most manufacturers claim a mpg about 30-40% above real world usage figures. This is the first time I've ever driven a vehicle that has better mpg figures than the manufacturer claims - urban is meant to be 26.4 mpg according to Land Rover, not the 32 mpg that we've been getting for urban driving!!

MPG improvements are a bit of a false economy in urban areas anyway. If you live in London, you might think that a 40 mpg car would be massively better than a 30 mpg car and worth spending extra or changing vehicle for. In reality though, if your commute is only 10 miles Mon-Fri (i.e. about 5000 miles per year), then you'd only be saving about 」250 a year in fuel. I know people who don't use their cars every day and probably only do a few thousand miles worth of driving a year who have sold their cars for more economical ones without realising what the actual cost 'savings' might be.
