Replacement of Shock Absorber

I am having a thumping sound at the rear passenger end - I've checked bushes, exhaust, spare tyre, towbar but all seem sound and secure. All that's left is the shock absorber (I think - any suggestions?).

The LR2 is no small car that you can bounce it up and down to check for shock absorber wear so I may need to take it off to check. Has anyone done this - is it a DIY job or best left to the techies/mechanics? Series 2a 88 - 1962
