Singapore 2013 Freelander 2 2.0T HSE Auto Aintree Green

I just got a FL2 Si4 for about a month and am enjoying Combined consumption is about 16L/100km with city driving.

Thanks for sharing your Si4 experiences. It is shocking and I will have to stick to Diesel engines then. Why did they replaced the V6 with a technically more complicated engine if it still guzzles fuel? Normally, I would prefer petrol over Diesel but if both have torbo's and the petrol is that thirsty, I see no point.

Turbochargers are sensitive to heat and dust, also to the thin air we have on the Highveld which is more than 3,000m above seal level. More than fifteen million people live there and we see from time to time how turbo's suffer up there. Luckily, I live at the coast, but I do travel to Johannesburg sometimes. Dust is another factor, very fine dust at that, so one will always look at naturally aspirated engines first. Add temperatures well above 40 - 50 degrees Celcius and engines do suffer. A turbo is just a complication but, if I cannot escape them, at least it should offer some benefit such as improved consumption.

Ar 14-16l/100km, even a Disco SDSV6 may be more economical as my friend's SE does 12l/100 in the city and around 8l/100 out of town and he has a heavy foot.

I believe a normally aspirated engine loses almost 20% of it's power in the highveld, so a turbo charged engine is a massive advantage as it compensates for this power loss.

Take a 100kw engine (n/a) and 100kw engine (turbo) at sea level and they are quite similar - put them at 1500m (which I think is Joburg) and the turbo engine has a massive advantage which is really important if towing.

Then there is the torque advantage of turbo motors at any altitude, but I agree they are less reliable as the complication of the turbo added to the higher stress levels of the engine. Johannesburg international airport (JNB), now renamed to OR Tambo, is at 1694 metres. There are places on the highveld at much greater altitudes, which is where many 4x4's are being used.

The problem with thin air is that, according to the engineers, turbo's spin at much higher revs than at seal level and turbo failures even in Johannesburg area (Witwatersrand region) had been quite common in the past. Better bearing technology and also higher quality synthetic oils did much to cut down on such failures.

On a different issue altogether: I understand that the FL2 has underbody protection plates, which is something not common to soft-roaders from Japan or Korea. I grew up in Merc and owned many myself; even the passenger cars had proper sump protection plates.....reminding me of a German Tiger tank. You will be astonished to see where I had driven with various W115 series Mercs. On rocky desert roads, deeply rutted and strewn with rugby ball sized rocks. Or a twin-rutted road that is in reality an erosion canal being used as a farm road. It isn't man-made; we just followed nature's course and it had happened at night. The next morning, we saw the actual road was running alongside, about fifty metres away. Shocked Laughing


Back to the topic: it seems that the Si4 also comes wearing a ballet dress and not exactly battle fatigues, so I would rather consider the SD4 then. There is no rush and I can still do my bit of research over a period of time. The SD4SE costs the same, more or less, than a Defender 110 station wagon. I so wish I could afford both!
