Hi, I'm new & need advice re the Freelander2 Roofbox

Hi there, I'm Jeremy and new to the forum. Pictures of the FL2 GS attached, she is a peach. Just been to the Chilterns LR experience and blown away by what a FL2 can actually do.

My only issue is that I need more space and have been looking at the LR roofbox(plus roofrails plus roof bars) and wondered if anyone had any experience or comments re it. I have a Halfords one and Thule cross cars from my previous BMW estate but Guy Salmon Thames Ditton couldn't say if it would fit.

Thanks in advance for any comments and hope to be able to contribute.

Regards
Jeremy

Hi Jeremy, and welcome to the forum

Firstly nice looking motor, in a nice colour too Whistle

From what you say your looking at LR rails and bars, others on here have bought and fitted themselves saving a far bit on dealer cost

If you a looking into the Thule roof bars, try searching on somewhere like Thule website, or roofbox.co.uk and this will give you the model of the feet and the length of bar required and then compare Thumbs Up

I like the look of the FL2 with roof bars, i just could justify the £190 outlay, (make sure you by the correct roof rails as there is 2 sets, sunroof and non sunroof) Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I had thule/Jaguar cross bars and a Thule/Jaguar roof box so decided to fit LR roof rails myself and re-use them after checking roof box company website.

Turned out website was wrong and the 120cm aerobars do not fit FL2 so had to buy 127cm aerobars but re-used footpack and roofbox so still happy.

IMHO Roof rails look better on FL2 and make it look bigger. I was also concerned about scratching roof with adaptor kits.

Ended up costing £199 for roof rails and £53.50 for 127cm bars.

I have the Thule Aero bars and connection kit on my FL2 HSE. Used them when we went on holiday to South Wales Sheep with the family [wife & 2 kids]. Worked out well Very Happy , liked the idea of detaching them when we got to our holiday cottage as we did not need to use the top box and roof rails while on hols. Not sure what others say but roof rails but they always create some wind noise and drag, removing them means you don’t get that especially with sun roof you notice it more. I personally feel the FL2 without roof rails looks cleaner. They did not damage the paint and are really easy to fit. Parts were Thule 750,1443 & 862 as we had a top box and used the same but had to order some T screws to connect the box to the roof rails direct from Thule. These slid down the grove in the Aero bar and locked down in the top box by thumb screws. Used http://www.roofracks.co.uk/main/products_index.htm They have very useful configurator. Razz Tried first Halfords they quoted 6wks lead time and more expensive, Roofracks it was all in stock Thumbs Up .

I agree with "mork", the FL2 looks cleaner without the roof rails and it seems a bit pointless fitting them unless you need to carry stuff on the roof the whole year round. In addition they DO cause wind noise when driving with the sunroof open Neutral

As I need to carry skiis on the roof during winter, I opted for Thule normal style bars and feet which are quickly fitted or removed when needed. Any roofbox can also be easily be fitted to these as well of course - The Thule alternative is also MUCH cheaper than the LR alternative and saves having noisy wind breaks on the roof all of the time Thumbs Up 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

Hi all....I'm struggling to understand what the issue is with the FL2 Roofbars/Box's....can someone explain the issue?

I had the dealer-fit roof-rails fitted on mine before I collected...Now I just use my old Roof box (From my Old 01MY "FL1", permanently fitted to a pair of Thule cross-bars) ....or my £10 Cross-bars (Shhhh...From Lidl a few years back) if I want to strap something to the roof...In this Pic you can just work out the £10 bars fitted (These Cross bars DO produce alot of wind noise, but with just the roof-rails, I dont notice any wind noise)

What am I missing?? '57 FL2 GS

I have not noticed wind noise with my roof rails either - fitted them myself Thumbs Up

Is it possible that roof rails on FL2's causing wind noise have been badly fitted or maybe sunroofs are the problem - I do not have one Confused

Maybe we should have a poll on roof rails with wind noise to help LR solve the problem for owners who have it Question
