All joking aside, I'd agree. Removable tow bar plus carrier. Tow bar may be useful further down the line anyhow.

Dont get hung up on an LR tow bar. I got a detachable Witter unit fitted and got the 13 pin electrics installed. Looks a lot better. Had one on my FL1 as well.

I had a towtrust fitted on my Evoque about 3 weeks ago its fully detachable and electrics swing behind the bumper so you can't even tell there is a mount there once removed. Freelander2 GS TD4 Manual in Lago Grey Smile .Roof Mount DVD 9.2''Screen~Window Tints~Parrot CK3100 Bluetooth~Retro Fit Sony Satnav~iPhone Dashmount~Side Steps~Woodco Armrest~Mudflaps~Land Rover Sunglass Holder~LED Interior Lights~Private Plate.Evoque Collected 17th Sept 2012.

I agree - get the tow bar and a decent bike carrier - it will be worth it in the long run.

On my 09 XS I got the fixed LR tow bar and used it with the Thule rack (can't remember the model number) and it worked a treat.

Hopefully it will also work fine with the detachable LR towbar which has been fitted to the new FL2 that I'm picking up this afternoon Very Happy ---

If you're tall (or prepared to stand on something, or ruin the look of your car with those awful side steps) I wouldn't rule out a roof carrier. They have their advantages (don't block the lights and number plate, or prevent access to the tailgate), and modern bikes are light enough to lift easily. A tow bar carrier is going to get expensive if you need the tow bar first, then the carrier itself and a lighting board.

Exactly.... found some strap on and clip on types which may help.... one I found had an adjustable height which should lift it out of the way of the lights.

I'd love a tow but version but with a new bat... the carrier and boards it all adds IP

I have used a couple of strap-on types in the past. They're OK, but not as secure as a properly-fitted one, and you have to be very careful, particularly if carrying more than one bike, to ensure that the bikes are firmly secured and padded so you don't damage either the bikes or the car. They also make access to the load area difficult.

I don't regularly carry bikes now, but if I did I would go for a good roof mount system (think Tour de France support cars). Unfortunately this wouldn't be that cheap either, unless you already have roof bars, but would still, I think, be significantly cheaper that a tow bar type, without the disadvantages of the latter.

Re the strap-on type, remember that to be legal the number plate must be unobscured as well as the lights, so you may still need a lighting board.

A tow bar is probably the best. I have a maxxraxx on mine and it is so solid. I appreciate it's not the cheapest option. I've had three bikes mounted on mine and probably could easily do 5. You don't even know they are there.

Roof mounted - just remember they are on top! Some car parks have height restrictions so you'll be taking them off before entering. It's a pain.

I think Thule do an internal carrier - if you have the space this might be a good option.

Morning all,

Thought I'd resurrect this thread!! Does anyone run the Witter detachable swan neck and can recommend a cycle carrier? The Witter website says no recommendations!

Is there a better detachable combo with rack?

I'm still a fan of maxxraxx. Have a look at their website.
