Australia 2013 Freelander 2 TD4 S Auto Indus Silver
Service intervals

I am the proud owner of a MY2013 TD4 Freelander. The handbook indicates that 12 months or 25000 kls (15500 miles) is the desired service interval, if driven under normal conditions. I know that synthetic oil is far superior to the old dinosaur oil but this seems an extraordinary amount of kilometers between oil changes. Can someone here reassure me that at 25000 kilometers the oil is as good as the day it was poured in. Maybe i don't get the new age oils.
I have also read the TSO thread with interest, as it appears to have a cleaner burn would this reduce the amount of soot in the oil which i believe gives old oil its treacle color.

Nobody keeps you from changing the oil sooner, half that distance for example.
The LR will be glad to do it (and take your money) and will mark this as an oil service, not an interval service. This was/is my case.

Alex

With all respect that was not the question I asked.
I cant write the question in Swahili so I will try again in English, is the oil just as good at 25000 Klms within the 12 month period.

I would think that the oil will be ok at 25000 k's as long as its changed in the correct time / distance. LR arnt going to say that the oil can last 25000 k's if it wont as they would have dealerships full of cars with damaged engines. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

Nobody could say oil will be as good as the day it went after 25000km, if the did they would be lying, as that's why it needs changing at that point

But as Alex says, if you, personally don't want to risk it, then swap the oil earlier Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Hi, I would say that the fully synthetic oils of today are easily capable of 15500mls. Most modern cars have service indicators and will flag up the need for an oil change. many vauxhaul car service frequencies are 20000mils.
However, being that you have paid a grate deal of wonga for you "baby", I would suggest a mid term oil change, depending on your style of driving.

Hi agree with Alex,

the oil should handle 25000 km but......

on a DPF cars the oil gets diluted by diesel during DPF regeneration

we live in "eco friendly" time where manufacturers are "saving the environment" by prolonging change intervals as much as possible

nobody in automotive industry wants the engine to last for 500 000 km.....buy a new car after 100 000 km

additives in oil are exhausted at max. 20 000km

old oil makes carbon deposits which causing fatal engine problems

old oil is an acid causing leaks ...etc...etc....

so if you want to keep your car for more than 2 or 3 years then YES half the period as Alex said.If you gonna sell it in two years with 40 000 km on the clock leave it on 15000 miles period.

I am changing mine at 15000 km / 9000 miles

Michal

Think of oil as the life blood of your engine, it cleans it lubricates it captures all the crap that is produced from moving parts in the engine and is then trapped in the oil filter. It helps cool the engine and stops the moving parts from super heating and melting.
It goes from one extreme to the other, as with all things in life depending on time and useage it will begin to lose its lubricating properties. This is why there is set intervals for renewing oil and filters etc after "Im sure a great number of tests" to keep everything running smoothly.
It stands to reason intertrim oil changes are good for engines and even more so for high mileage and extra hard working.
At the end of the day its compleatly up to you what you want to do Thumbs Up

My Freelander is the 3.2 petrol, so not strictly comparable with the diesel on oil contamination. When I took delivery - 2009 - service interval was 6 months, 12000kms, because the required synthetic oil was not readily available in Australia. It now is, and Land Rover Australia have told me (in writing!) that I can move to the 12 month, 24000km service interval. However, in line with comments on here, I'm not that happy with such a long oil change period. I'm even less sure about not having the car generally checked - pads, gaiters, coolant etc - over such a long period particularly with our severe conditions. I therefore stick with the 6 month, 12000km routine. I should add that even with the 12 month oil change, Land Rover recommended a 6 month 'safety check', although it wasn't a specific service interval.

Thanks fellas for the responses, I conclude from above that more often is beneficial to the motor in the long run and i do intend to keep this car for a prolonged period, probably sell it in parts at the end.
No one i suspect has had premature engine wear because they changed the oil to often.

That sounds suspiciously like the Freelander1 Stevie
