Nigel - straight back to the dealer! From the figures I have seen, the SD4 should be more economical than the early models (such as mine). Your fuel consumption is a little alarming to say the least. I could only guess at binding brakes or whatever. My 61 plate SD4 has averaged 34.74mpg since getting it last April (about 8000 miles). The best was 42.70mpg on a 240 mile journey, and I have just covered 230 miles today with 39mpg. What you will find though is a drastic difference if you are just a little heavy footed. The SD4 is great but unforgiving on mpg if you use that power!!

Nigel, the problem now is how do you convince your dealer, unless it is black or white in their faces it's usually dismissed.
Is there anything mechanical like others have said, does it roll in neutral on very slight inclines at lights/junctions etc or does any binding keep it from rolling.
Ask for the EGR system to be checked and any other emissions control also, this would be my favourite.

I have not specifically tested rolling on a slight incline in neutral but will do so today. Thanks for the advice ref the dealer and EGR system.

I had wondered about remapping, chipping or 2 stroke oil as a viable solution although I would rather get it up to circa 35MPG first.

LRs do not return good MPG if driven in town environments ie heavy traffic. You only need short hold-ups or traffic crawls to totally blow your average MPG. When I lived down your way I was getting much lesss to the gallon than I do in the relatively low traffic environment of Suffolk.

That said, I can't agree with your comments about your E320 as I too have a Merc E320 CDI Sport and it always turns in a much better MPG than my SD4 - both in town and on long journeys.

You need to get on a motorway and drive a few hundred miles not exceeding 70mph. If you don't get betweeen 38 and 41 MPG it's either a problem or your driving style. But before you do that give it an Italian tune-up!

This is where I am having the problem:

These are manufacturers figures. We all take at least 10% off these figures to get to 'real world' However, as you and I both agree the Merc will better the FL2 SD4 figures easily. But I am having a sense of humour problem over LR quoting much better figures than the Merc and yet I am getting with a light foot 27-29MPG real world figures.

It is all very well everyone defending the FL2 as a great car and forget the MPG but surely one does look at the specs when buying the vehicle and fuel is only get more expensive so at some stage FL2 owners who for whatever, reason are getting poor economy (some are getting fantastic MPG figures) will be finding it hard to justify such an expensive vehicle to own.

Bottom line: LR Marketing says the vehicle is more economical than a Merc E320 estate (2005) and real world says this is not true and personally I am seeing 27-29MPG.

Are you diesel or petrol? If diesel 23MPG is pretty bad. To convert litres to gallons divide by 4.546

With the diesel Freelander if your after better economy you ideally need to keep the RPM below 2000 or there or thereabouts, go much above that and it slurps it. But at the end of the day if economy is towards the top of your list then a Land Rover is not for you.

Combined fuel consumption for SD4 is 40.4. On a recent journey from Leicestershire to East Midlands I got 38.5 on the way there and 37.8 on the way back in works SD4. Mostly motorway sticking to the speed limit and slightly below.

Getting 27 - 29 mpg from an SD4 is better than I get from the work one but then it spends most of its time off road which eats fuel. In normal use I'd expect 32 - 35 mpg from an SD4 running on A and B roads with the odd bit of dual carriageway and 36 - 39 on the same roads in a TD4 manual.
