2007 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Stornoway Grey

Size Of Tank

Hi Folks
I was running short of fuel trying to maximise my 5p off per litre at a well known horse traders! We got down to single figures and I needed to fill up. The tank took approx 70.21 litres.
Two questions. How big is tank. How close was I to running out of fuel the computer said 0 miles but is there a secret supply?

Official tank capacity is 68 litres. You can, as you discovered squeeze in a bit more by brimming the tank.

Dont brim the tank on a hot day unless your driving some distance right away. Fuel expands with heat and it will be all down the side of your car and money waisted.

I've done over 20 miles in a FL2 with zero on the display. It's not the lack of fuel it is the enforced limp mode that gets irritating.

It's the limp mode that got you to the pumps Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Also worth remembering that fuel pumps are legally allowed to deliver more or (usually) less than shown on the meter Gone... 2013 XS TD4 Manual Firenze Red

I was just about to post about this,

Ran the Freelander for 604 miles over the last tank, and then put £100 in which was 70.08ltrs.
But managed to get just over 39mpg

I really did brim it, as the fuel neck kept taking more and more as air bubble kept comming up.

Is there a breather system on the FL2 tank? or is it a closed system.

Just want to make sure I'm not losing any fuel...... Freelander 2 HSE Lux SD4 - Sumatra Black

You have a saddle type tank, half one side of the propshaft and half the other, a small pump you may hear when turning on the ignition equalises the amount of fuel in each compartment, when filling up you have probably filled the offside (it will also run over to the nearside) and you are squeezing the last remaining air out of the near side compartment.

Don't think it is a vented system as I often hear a rush of air when I remove the filler cap.

No, I wouldn't have thought so...however, I have just once managed to break the 600 miles to a tank, averaging between 40 and 42 mpg. The secret to that was mainly Motorway driving at a boring and tedious 65mph...I was determined to see if it could do it, and whilst I have never repeated it, I know it is capable at a push of reaching that number.

2012 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Santorini Black

On long hourneys (cross country or motorway) we can get our Freelander2 GS (MY12 manual 150ps) to over 600mile range and the best I saw was about 45mpg. Around town and more local driving it can see 500 miles range. Or at the wifes hand about 350-400 miles range.

If you fill it untill it overflows (See puddle next to inside of R/Rear wheel) it takes 72...

The amount of fuel delivered gradually rises with wear and tear.The pumps can legally be set to deliver slightly less than indicated at first, so that the average between settings is about right. I have read that supermarkets will have their pumps recalibrated as often as twice a day to take advantage of this. There is more information on the web, as I recall, if you search diligently.
