Bought a 'blank' fob off ebay. Whats my chances?

Bought a fob off ebay. Allegedly new and unprogrammed. I know, I know, everyone says you shouldn't but it seems like a bargain. £45 + £4 delivery. Arrived today nicely packaged and the fob was in a sealed plastic bag so I'm hopeful. Before buying, I checked sellers feedback and contacted a previous purchaser who confirmed that the one he bought was able to be programmed and works fine.

Prices for programming range fron £22 from an independant to £84 + VAT from Shatstones or some other Main Dealer with a similar sounding name. Rolling Eyes Hmmm, who should I try?

I am sure a new key from the dealer is not that expensive, you will still need to get the blank bit of the key cut too

From memory, was quoted £120 for remote, £70 for blank key, programming and VAT took it up to near the £300 mark!
I have two remotes already so don't need the blade. One of the remotes works in the car but doesn't seem to be holding a charge. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Please let us know how you get on - I need another one and thinking of doing the same. Note you are from Essex, I have used Essex 4x4 near Billericay / Wickford and rate them highly. Pretty sure they can programme keys. GS With HSE Alloys, Sat-Nav, Full leather interior, Roof-Bars, Dog Guard

Many thanks, Mexi. Went there this afternoon. 15 minutes later and £30 plus VAT and it was all sorted. So, in all, a brand new remote fob delivered and programed has cost me £85. Well pleased, especially as I negotiated £200 off the price of the car because of the faulty remote. Mr. Green Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Looking at the sellers feedback, he sells them on a regular basis so there's bound to be more come up. Seller's id is cwprint2011. Gets a big Thumbs Up from me. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Excellent news! Thanks for the update, I actually bought a new rechargeable battery ready to cut my spare key and have a go at replacing but after not working for six months it now appears to work perfectly! Typical. Will probably buy one from your e-bay friend once they re-list and go along to Essex 4x4 for programming! GS With HSE Alloys, Sat-Nav, Full leather interior, Roof-Bars, Dog Guard

Glad you're sorted too. It's always a worry for any car with just the one coded fob/chipped key! I always worry about the expense of losing the last key - worse still if you are not at home. Big Cry Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Auto Rimini Red

I bought one of these so thanks go to Steve D for a good recommendation.

I emailed my favorite independent (DAS Horley) and a main dealer(Harwoods Crawley) for a price to program. DAS want £45 and Harwoods £66. Both seem steep to me but they both said it could take an hour and possibly several attempts. DAS has a local "greasy spoon" cafe nearby while Harwoods have a "free" coffee. Greasy spoon it is then saving £21 on the "free" coffee.

I also bought a blank blade for £7 of the bay of fleas. Does anybody know if Timpsons are able to copy the original? - 2007(57) XS Auto, Rimini Red, Alpaca Leather.
