England 2007 Freelander 2 TD4_e HSE Manual Ipanema Sand
Rear diff on freelander 2

Hi everyone excellent site much props to mods.

Here we go just bought a freelander 2 07 reg car seems fine with out any problem I took for a small test drive and didn't notice any major issues with the car picked it up about a week later and once I got on to the motor way noticed a humming sound coming from the car took it to a local LR garage near me and was told it was the rear diff that is cousing the problem and in fact it was actually noticeable as soon as you move off (me being think just thought that it was because it was a diesel) any way just waiting for a quote for the repair but just wandering if any one could advise me of 2 things first a rough price on how much that would cost to repair and two if the garage I bought the car from offered a warranty do you this this should be covered? Any advice wold be nice.

Thanks in advance.

If it has a warranty take it back. This is not an unknown issue as a search of this site would reveal.

The cost of doing it depends on who is doing it and what they do. The cheap fix is fitting new pinion bearings and the more expensive job is a complete bearing replacement job. Either way not cheap.

If you are handy with spanners you can get a complete rebuild kit on e bay for about £150 or about £500 gets you a second hand diff. John

I would say talk to the garage you bought it from 1st just to let them know and see what they say,It might be a good idea to have the fault put in wrighting so you can show them that aswell as they will probtry to get out of it and say they cant haer or see the problem.
Sure ive seen it on here that its around the grand mark to have repaired via LR but could be wrong Embarassed

If all goes Censored up with dealer you are within your rights to have the repair done and claim the value back via small claims.
You also have the right to reject the car and demand a full refund if you wish you can do this for upto 6 months under the sales of good act BUT as more time goes on the dealer is also aloud to deduct what would be agreed as devaluation due to the amount of time and mileage covered.
The sooner you act the better.

Good luck in what evea you decide to do

As already said, if you bought from a dealer you have guarantees. Get it sorted asap and let us know how you get on. Thumbs Up Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

United Kingdom 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Sumatra Black

Just had my rear diff bearings replaced, cost £475 in total from a local garage. 57 plate on 57k miles. Noticed a humming sound from the rear last November (shortly after my 2nd replacement clutch being fitted) - noticeably worse under acceleration. The noise become more apparent over time. Didn't even bother contacting landrover, as they were not interested when i had the clutch slip again on the replacement clutch - Rolling Eyes

I really love the car, but poor form on Land Rovers part whom as far as i am aware have never really acknowledged faults with the clutch and diffs... I don't expect a full recall, but at least offer of replacement (or reasonable contribution) even if the car is out of warranty.

57k miles, now on it's 3rd clutch and new diff bearings... had teh car from new back in December 2007, The car has never been off road and has never towed - not a good advert for LR really.

Just glad i managed to get a new steering wheel, new drivers seat, 1st replacement clutch and a few other warranty claims in prior to it running out 2 years ago! Very Happy

Love the new MY13, but would seriously think twice before going with another new LR. 2008 SE, HSE wheels, Black Premium Leather, Privacy Glass, Sports Kit, Side Steps, various LED upgrades and Clear side indicators.

My local LR dealer want 650 for the low line repair. I'm about to go back and say it sounds a little pricey on the basis the parts are 150 and the tsb reckons on 3.2 hours to do the repair... I'm not hopeful but will try! Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

Hi all again found out that the 2nd hand dealership that I got th car from knew about a slight noise coming from rear but assumed it could be a wheel bearing that was cousing the problem despit this he still sold me the car he also now tells me that the warranty that he has witch he called a 2 star warranty only covers him for engine and gearbox up to the value of £300 but as he knew of the problem he would pay up to that amount Censored Big Cry I find this a disgrace how I have had the car for 2 weeks and he still won't pay for the issue despite him selling me the car with the fault. Any advice please on what I should do?.

In order to help you to focus your supplying dealer:- when I had a similar problem I provided my sloping shouldered garage owner with a copy of the document I found at www.oft.gov.uk/shared_oft/reports/676408/oft1241.pdf and asked him to have a read in his own time but I had specifically highlighted items 8.3 & 9.6 for him. I also mentioned that I had made an appointment to see the Citizens Advice Bureau the following week to discuss the matter.

Fortunately, he called me the following day and had decided to resolve the problem so I did not have to take it any further. Of course you can go legal and the Sale of Goods Act will protect you but its always going to be quicker and cheaper if the dealer 'sees the light'.

By way of some more possible encouragement (and a separate event to the above); I was absolutely convinced the rear rumble on mine was the diff but Green Oval's investigations found the source and it turned out to be the nearside rear wheel bearing. By the way, and its a long story, but my advice would be not to bother taking it to the LR Centre at Speke for a second opinion - in my experience it will be a waste of time.

All i can add is dont worry,The used car dealer doesnt have a leg to stand on under the sales of goods act.
If he digs his heals in in anyway and you dont wish to reject the car and get your money back sort the repair needed and claim it back via the small claims.
