What make and model

Have I caught your attention Smile

The rescue home paperwork for our dog says 'Collie Cross', we thought a bit of 'Golden Retriever', now she has grown to adult we are thinking 'Spaniel'. I'm not sure what to put on her insurance renewal as it asks for the breeds when I input 'Crossbreed'.

What do you doggy people reckon for the two strongest breeds that she has Question

I don't think I'd like to call that one! The body looks retriever-ish, but the head doesn't look particularly retriever or collie to me - it has a more solid look, more like a Staffie (apart from the ears, obviously).

You'd be amazed what's in some dogs. I know someone who had a DNA test done on their dog following a dispute at a competition - I forget the details now, but the dog had DNA from breeds which it bore no resemblance to at all!

Unfortunately such tests don't seem to be available in the UK - I seem to recall this person had to get the test done in the States. (The whole thing was something of a farce - this particular dog looked nothing remotely like a collie, and was running in a class from which collies were banned. Another competitor tried to claim that the dog was, in fact, a collie - which would require it to be 50% plus collie iirc - and the judge stupidly banned the dog pending investigation! The DNA test showed the dog to be about 10% collie, but the mix of other breeds was amazing.)

Perhaps I mistakenly took the original paperwork as true and thought of her as a 'crossbreed', when in reality she is a 'mongrel' and a mixture of many.
I believe on the insurance application I can choose 'mongrel', much as I dislike the name Laughing

I obviously don't want them to dismiss any future claim I may make by saying the description is not correct.

strange they don't just except just cross breed, if you rescue a dog, unless all the documentation was handed in then the rescue centre has to put cross breed down even if it was a pure pedigree, or so i thought, unless its clearly a boxer dog, collie, pit bull etc Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

The insurance online form accepts 'mongrel' with no other questions on breed but 'crossbreed' wants two breeds to complete, so far I have bitza/heinz but for some reason the drop down list doesn't have them listed Confused Laughing

Is there any feature of a breed that stands out Question

Lots - that's the problem! Smile

The stance is retriever-like, but the body is chunkier than a retriever, and the legs and tail look shorter. The head (sans ears) has the bear-like appearance of some of the stouter breeds, which taken together with the chunkiness of the body and relatively short legs makes me think there's something of that nature in her - maybe Staffie or something like that. The colouring and markings, look retriever-ish in parts, but the white chest could be collie, or even from the 'chunky' strain. The darker streaks towards the top of the back contain something other than retriever too.

I'd say there's probably retriever there all right, plus something a bit on the chunky side. Maybe Staffie or something like it. But that's about the best I can do! (Caveat - I've spent a bit of time around dogs, but I'm no expert, so don't rely on anything I say!)

Nice dog though.

Cheers pab Thumbs Up

Yes, I'll probably have to go with 'mongrel' and ring the Insurance company to explain why I am changing her breed status from last year, and for them to accept it.
