Oil for SD4

hi I am trying to find the best oil available over the counter for 2012 SD4. I spoke to the local dealer they buy their oil in bulk but don't appear to sell in their parts department. Also although the Land Rover spec sheet mentions Castrol 5W 30 Professional Magnatec ( which doesn't seem to be available to the general public) the dealer talks about using a 5W 40 but were a bit woolly. All I want is a good quality oil which wont void my warranty that I can put in myself in between services as the dealer will only change the oil every 12 months

Errr - the LR Australia service schedule - including oil & filter change - is 12,000km or 6 months (I assume the 6 months period in Australia is due to our less than perfect diesel fuel and the gunk it can leave in the engine & oil). You might think of contacting LR Australia and informing them that their dealer in question has obviously gotten confused between 12,000 km and 12 months.

What dealer refuses to change oil in a car when requested to do so by the customer, anyway? That's just bizarre. I had my first oil change performed by the dealer at 3 months/6000km in anticipation of a long trip which would have taken me well past the 12,000km schedule time (and also to remove any of the initial run-in debris which might have occurred), and the dealer was only too happy to change the oil & filter and charge me handsomely for doing so, and then again at 16,000km when I returned, all within the first four months of vehicle ownership.

As the farmers around here say of their diesel engined-vehicles, change the oil every 5,000 miles (hey this is Tasmania, metrification will take longer than 50 years) and the engine will last forever. There are 3 1995-97 Hi-Luxes on my neighbour's farm which will attest to that, along with an old BJ-45 ute which has over 750,000km on the original motor.

Not to sure which year model is being discussed
But when I look at LR Australia site Service Interval Table it shows 12month/26000 Km, so I assume it may have changed for MY12 plus models ? or am I looking at the wrong info, is this reflected in the Handbook for MY12 and on ???
(discounting extreme use were service is required sooner)

Hi Alan Pieeater is right the MY12 service is every 12 months / 24,000Kms I can ask the dealer to do the oil change on the 6 month service but I don't know what the reply will be as the vehicle is on a Novated lease and includes all service costs. I intend to buy the vehicle at the end of the lease hence I want to make sure that the engine is in tip top condition. I am quite happy to do an oil change myself but finding the correct oil in Aus. is a bit of a nightmare.

Hi Iam a new member and I thought that I would like to add my experince with oil and servicing .I have a 2009 td4se that I bought used with 30k on clock now with 65k. The original oil used for servicing by the dealer in Vic was castrol magnatec profesional 5w-40 and I have continued to use that . I purchase a 20ltr drum from local agent and take it to the service that I like to get done every 10k by a local mechanic that has a real intrest in landrovers . the landrover agent in Darwin is a Mitsubishi dealer and the service department aren't really interested in L/Rs .A couple of other things that might be helpful is how I fitted a uhf radio, used a uniden remote unit under the seat and a glass mounted antena , works well as I find generally people only use radios talking to others that are close anyway . Similar solution with eletric brake controler ,a remote unit with a control fitted in a shaped perspex holder sitting in the rearmost cavity in the centre consoul works well and no holes in vechicle .

OK, I had thought it was just a ripoff - the UK 2011 model was 12 months but my 2011 Aus handbook clearly states 6 months/12,000km, and has the service blanks so marked for the dealer to fill in. As there is no difference between MY 2011 & MY 2012, it appears that more than a few others must have complained about the rort.

Unfortunately I'm at a disadvantage - there is only one LR dealer in Southern Tassie, so I had no real option but to believe what they said.

Hi Alan7140
It might be worth checking if there is a qualified mechanic and service centre that has an intrest in L/Rs in your area .I am fairly sure that if they are qualified and can stamp you service book they can carry out services without harming your warranty . Also worth a look is UK L/R spare parts sites for your filter ect . I had to replace a tail light assembly recently ,purchased it from UK with 2 sets of premium filters (oem) paid 110 pound freight for a total of $aud 420, price of tail light alone from local dea;er $aud 410 . My mechanic is quite happy to use the filters as it saves him chasing around to buy them for himself .
