Buying used

Hello!

I am hoping to buy a 2009 XS on the weekend. It has 55k on the clock and it from a LR dealer.

I am after some help on want to look out for when checking over the car and paperwork before I hand the cash over!! Shocked

I have been reading the forum and apart from checking services and oil changes have been completed when they should have been, is there anything else?

I saw these are problems people have had:
Fuel filter not being changed
Is 55k miles nearing the end of the clutch?
The sat nav system is in full working order (that repair looks expensive!)

Is there anything else to check or look at before I hand over the money!?

Thanks, any advice will be really appreciated

Check that it unlocks/locks with the fob paying attention to the rear door as water ingress upsets the locking mechanism.
Look for signs of water inside rear hatch door caused by leaking third brake light.
Look for passenger carpet wetness caused by air con drain pipe dislodged.
Make sure you have two fobs and check they both work, remember to swap use every few months to keep charged.
Check front seat belts are not frayed on edges, there is a modification available for this.
On a startup, after a few seconds check no warning lights are illuminated on the dash.
Make sure you have the wheel locking nut socket handed over to you.
All wheel arch trims (push on metal reinforced rubber trim strip) tend to expand and look grubby after a few years, cheap enough to replace but feel under the arch and get dealer to do if needed.
2009, should also have had a brake fluid change if/on third service.
Check all movement of electric seats.

Most seem to be covered , however if it has partial leather seats /plastic .check drivers and passenger side squab for white lines as you squash the side, was a free replacement on my 09 but usually squealers trick ohh not covered under warranty

Go to dealer and quote the Special Service Message "SSM46337 - Leather seat side panel splits - Service parts", published on November 15, 2010.

and if they offer a all parts and labour warranty take it, check cam belt and all fluids have been changed, brakes pads, check spare wheel if it has been used (blow up get you home is rubbish ..) full size spare good , if it is dealer serviced then they should be happy to give you a copy of what has been done , always ASK ...!!

Good Luck

All good stuff above except they won't change the cambelt. This is a 150,000/10 year item. Expect to get a new MOT.

Check the tyres are all good and of the same type/make. They can check and tell you what work, if any, has been done under warranty/recall. Ask if there are any outstanding software updates. John

When you take it up the road, accelerate hard up from second, third and fourth checking that the clutch is not slipping, you tend to notice it as you accelerate off roundabouts, keeping any eye on the Rev Counter.

It is the slipping at speed you need to watch for, it won't do it when parked, it's only in the higher gears under acceleration. Thumbs Up

All good gen above. 4 extra tips:

1. There is a B-pillar trim mod which came out in 2011 and if you have any marks/cuts into your B-pillar caused by the seat belt they should replace it for the modified version - if you ask !

2. Buy an auto !

3. Best not to mention BMWs on this forum, unless you hate them, as there is an anti-BMW undercurrent on here !!

4. Did I mention buy an auto ??!! FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green
Evoque SD4 Auto Blue.
FL1 HSE TD4 Manual Black - Gone.
RR Classic V8 EFI - Gone

That's a very good point about the auto.

Remember, if you have a leg count of < 2 and /or you've only managed to obtain a license for an automatic car so far, remember to buy an auto; whats more, these days there isn't even an "automatic" badge on the back of the car, so no one else need know! Wink Laughing

Either way, it's still a damn good show trading up from the BMW! Thumbs Up

No, because it's a hydraulic clutch, so is self-adjusting. Therefore impossible to tell if it's worn. On the other hand there are other indications, like a stiff pedal or clutch slip in 5th and 6th, that tell you something's wrong.

Our clutch pedal engages quite high up, but there is no sign of distress, and we can tow a fully laded caravan without any sign of slipping.

My fiesta Zetec-S suited a manual, I stongly believe the FL2 is at it's best with an auto.
