Snow Smash

So after an uneventful 100+ mile round trip to North Yorkshire yesterday afternoon, it all went wrong in the final 20 metres outside my house.

It had been snowing all the way home and there was a moderate covering on the roads up to my house. Opposite the house is a junction on a tight bend on steep incline where I needed to turn left. I'd pulled out wide like I always do, had GGS engaged on the TR and thought I'd let HDC do the work. Big mistake. I pushed the HDC button and took my foot off the brake. I never checked the HDC had engaged but even if it had, it wasn't slow enough for the situation. The car picked up too much momentum going round the corner, lost traction in the snow and despite my best efforts I'm now sliding towards the (very high) kerb. Front offside wheel hit the kerb with an almighty BANG.

I was half expecting to have left the wheel behind inserted into the kerb stone but thankfully managed to complete the final few metres of the journey with steering still functioning and all wheels attached. Alloy is scuffed and have developed a light vibration in the steering so think I've bent the wheel or tracking or maybe steering arm? Far far worse is the damage to my pride. Have been very much beating myself up about the whole affair and that I should have avoided it. Embarassed

On the bright side I didn't demolish any street furniture like a friend has done in recent days. Anybody else had any run-ins during the snow?

Oh and because I know people will ask, I'm not on winter tyres but 4 pretty well worn Conti 4x4 Contact.

Iain, the neighbour gets his FL2 in and out with ease as he also has a patrol driven snow blower he clears the drive with! He certainly wins on the 'show off' front.

Forget pride you came out of it ok,also i would always prefer a new wheel or something that unbolts and a new one bolted on than a body work repair, you were lucky i think.

Sorry to hear that monkey, its alway more painful when you do the damage yourself. As for HDC, it does seem to be a bit fickle. A controlled movement from the top of hill, switch on HDC, ease forward and it works spotlessly. Switch it on when moving and release all pedals......and wait and see!! Sometimes it kicks in, other times nothing.
Maybe it's just me.

Best to stop and set up the car before negotiating any tricky bits....30 years of off roading has taught me that. Also set the HDC to slowest setting with cruise control buttons (on MY2013 at least) and ease down the hill. Feet off clutch and brake (strap them to your neck Thumbs Up )
Stay safe...... * GONE. GS TD4 Manual MY2013. Orkney Grey with privacy, cold and clearview packs, armrests (a must!) and a spoiler.

Went around a roundabout yesterday in the FL2 like Miss Daisy. The snow was falling heavily and I was in GGS mode. Could not believe iit when the car slid sideways front and rear (mainly). The slide stopped suddenly and I got on my way. Having looked this morning, I think/hope the slide was arrested by the tyres gripping and not the kerb. Had a look at the Scorpions this morning - all around 3 - 4 mm. Winter tyres next year for me ! FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green

Got to agree with DrRpb!

I know you can change setting in the FL2 without stopping but it is always best to stop, evaluate the road/track ahead and sort all your settings out before you tackle the tricky section!

Always remember "as slow as possible, as fast as necessary" is the best motto for any situation that requires your car to use its 4x4 ability!

From your description I am not sure if you had engaged the HDC before arriving at the bend or as you arrived at it? The HDC takes a little while to kick in (you will see the light on the dash flashing for a second or 2 as it enables) so always enable it before you need it rather than after it is too late as looks to be the case here.

It's easy to be wise after the event but... if this ever happens again and you run wide SLOWLY towards a kerb, try and apply opposite lock so that the impact with the kerb is taken with the tyre (as close to straight on as you can) and not the rim. Only works (as it did for me) if slow enough not to mount the pavement having steereing into it!

The tyre should absorb the impact but even if the tyre suffers, you have a spare and it's cheaper to replace than a wheel.

GGS and all TR functions are extremely good but nobody can defy the laws of Physics - when there is no grip at the tyre-road interface, you will slide no matter how many wheel drive you've got - there is a YouTube video of Range Rover with all 4 wheels spinning in a grass/mud car park Gone... 2013 XS TD4 Manual Firenze Red
