Towing

Please forgive me for possibly a numpty question, but how well do they cope with towing trailered cars? I need to be able to tow a lotus Elise a fair number of times a year to track days and sprints.

Also what mpg can you expect with a 1300kg tow?

Thanks all,

Keith

England 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Baltic Blue

Towing limit for a Freelander 2 is 2000 kg so should have no issues with a 1300kg tow.

Use the search facility and you'll find lots of info on towing, eg http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic12342.htm...ing+weight . But I doubt if you'll even notice you're towing that sort of load!
If you have a manual though you may find the clutch a bit smelly starting on hills, and a number of people have said they find it difficult reversing a trailer uphill because the reverse gear is not particularly low.

I don't think your Freelander will even notice 1300KG on the back !

Auto is best for towing, its just brilliant and effortless. Once had to do a hill start in the Pyrenees on a 1-5 hill on a double bend with 1600kg on the back and was expecting an issue and it pulled away with out so much of a grunt, after that i have been smitten with auto. So much better than burning a clutch.

I get about 21-23 towing 1600KG and if i drive like a nun 26 towing

Good to here. I was towing with a BMW e46 330d estate, the car didnt really like it and it was very noticeable (car rated to 1800kg towing), mpg dropped to 18mpg as well which was a little crippling.

Hoping that with the better height and weight of the fl2 that it would be a bit more of a pleasureable experience.

Hi, its a little bit more involved than that. It depends on the trailer, if its "braked" or not.
For a novice, a rule of thumb is 85% of the kerbweight and then up to 90% or a shade higher for a braked trailer.
I think that the "rated" load is its ability to pull. I may stand to be corrected.
For a 1300kg trailer, I sure you wont have any issues. I think the nose weight is rated at 150kg.
