17" V 18"

Hi Folks,

I have a MY10 XS which runs on 17" wheels.
I have a chance of picking up a set of 18" wheels and I
Was thinking of fitting winter tyres to them.
So my questions are,

1. Does anyone reckon there's a difference in handling
Between the two sizes? Ride quality any different?
2. Does anyone know if either of the sizes are easier to get tyres
For? I have the impression that some wheel sizes have a wider choice
Of fitment but I could be talking rubbish.

By the way, my current tyres on the 17" have lots of tread left so
Putting winters on the 17" and new summers on the 18" wheels isn't
An option really.

Stuart

Hi Stuart
I can't answer from experience whether a FL2 on 17 or 18 would be better in the snow, but I doubt there would be much noticeable difference to the average driver like me.
With regards question 2, you won't have any problems getting the 18's winter tyres, and Andy at AJS will point you in the right direction. He fitted 235 60 18 Wintrac extreme 4 tyres for me this week and I am chuffed with them.
It's a shame your 17's have good tyres on them because the 18's will cost a bit more to put winter boots on.

Good luck _________________

Hi Aero

Thanks for your reply.
Yes I'd rather have the 18s for
Summer but there you go.
I got Pirelli scorpion atr last winter and I'm
Just not happy with them they're wearing
Well but they just don't inspire confidence.
I wonder if it's just my set as lots of people
Rate them highly.
Anyway, I've already been on email
To Andy at AJS regarding tyres.
Stuart

I has scorpion zero's on mine, and they lasted about 20,000 miles. The Wintracs are so sure footed and give me more confidence on bends, although to be fair the scorpions were down to about 3mm.
I am going to try these all year round to see how they do in the summer as Andy reckons they will be fine.

Well,

If we have another summer like this year
Winter tyres will be more suitable anyway!

I have 17s and I just put 18s on with winter tires...

No noticible difference at all, they work great offroad, and in snow... And they look much better. I will keep my 17s though and put muds on for the summer, and leave the 18s as my road tyre. Tyres a re a bit pricier than the 17s, but I think they really suit the LR2 actually. Nice proportions of alloy and rubber.

18" wheels had Goodyear Wrangers on. lasted well, sure footed - down to 3mm.
Knocked seven bells out of the rims, both off-road and with the kerbs.
Now fitted with Goodyear winter tyres, heavier on fuel, better when cold, no snow yet Sad

17" wheels with Goodyear MTs on. Kerbs no problem, no more noticeable body roll than the 18", fantastic noise, again heavier on fuel than 18" std. tyres. Mud Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy , snow no problem, standing water Very Happy Very Happy , ice Shocked

For me there is little difference in looks apart from the fact that the 18" are badly marked. Prefer the 17" for tyre choice and practicality. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner
