Depending on the colour of the smoke it could be many different causes.

Usually on start up, especially when cold there can be unburnt fuel due to the low temperatures, this gives rise to white smoke.
Condensation can be seen at low temperatures as steam emitted from the tailpipe, again it will be white/clear.
Blue smoke is caused by oil entering the cylinders, sometimes on brand new engines until things bed down or high mileage engines with wear being a factor allowing oil to get into the cylinders.

All engines will emit smoke in one form or another, especially on start up, if it goes away quickly and doesnt happen during driving then I wouldn't be too worried.

Let us know what it is more precisely and there may be other or more specific reasons.

Thanks Taztastic,

Car only done 19k and seemed to be a little Blue smoke on start up but only start up as soon as engine running nothing coming out. obviously a littl cold this morning so may have been to do with that. Personally i wouldnt expect blue smoke on start up not on modern cars, but new to FR2 so not sure what to expect.

i have also noticed that in the dark and under load you can see smoke in the person behinds lights when accelerating, car has been in for some warrenty work and i ask them to check this but they claim thats normal, again not experienced that on other diesels i have had.

thanks for you help so far

A little blue smoke on start up that immediately disappears is no great problem, indeed not really a problem at all. Check the oil level, if its not using any then all is well, a tiny amount of oil produces a lot of smoke.

Regarding seeing smoke on acceleration, this is the fuel, try a couple of tanks of Vpower and it may disappear, I see a little on occasions but generally very little.

Its been reported (in a very very long thread) that adding the 2so can reduce this smoke on start up.

Mine gives a little blueish smoke on start up on occasions. More often when left for days at a time, which is not unusual. It clears straight away.

On heavy acceleration I get a little black smoke after the initial foot down part if you know what I mean, but most diesels do this. It doesnt use a drop of oil so I am not concerned at all.

I get a little more smoke when I run the re-map but again this is to be expected. I havent got a DPF so it will act like a normal diesel.

My friends 2009 HSE doesnt smoke at all with his re-map as he has a DPF. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........
