I work from home and so Internet connectivity is important to me, I also have a wife a three children who now all appear to be reliant on the Internet!

if no cable or fibre to cabinet it all depends on the distance from the exchange and type of cable i.e copper or aluminium..all providers use openreach plant |

Be careful with Talk Talk, they are not top charts for customer service. |

Thanks mike e - no cable or FTTC and yup fully aware BTOR plant which is why the line quality concerns me - but that is one issue. My issue now is getting the best value speed / usage policy from a decent provider. I am with Virgin Media. 60 meg (fibre optic naturally) and it's part of a package with Tivo box and phone line. The call centre is annoying as it is in Baghdad I believe but if you ask to be put through to the 'thinking of leaving us' department, they put you through to someone in England who you can understand (mostly )

Look at Plusnet. "Good honest broadband from Yorkshire". Actually owned by BT but cheaper and excellent customer service. 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

Was just going to come back and add to my reply with this info, we pay for the plus net pro option, which gives you line speed at all times for all traffic, our neighbours are on BT and have compared at peak times, our browsing is much faster. Plust net also offer much lower contention ratios than competitors (the number of people you share the bandwidth with) One thing to watch are the download limits, think we are on 60gig, sometimes we go over that and have to pay but don't get throttled, if you are doing big downloads try and schedule them between the hours of midnight and 7 as they don't add to your monthly quota at those times. On the virgin note, I was very impressed with the download speed, but found the browsing shocking, the routing was terrible, the delay wasted bouncing around different virgin managed equipment before you hit the rest of the internet made it feel very slow. I don't know if this helps (lots of text follows...). Broadly you get a wide choice of services from Plusnet and I have recommended them to many friends who are delighted.
