I'm not missing the point at all Exclamation

I was merely pointing out that with a D4 you would have a deeper wading depth Rolling Eyes ______________________

Snorkels aren't only for wading. In Australia they are useful for getting the air intake up out of the dust a bit. The dirt roads can be unbelievably dusty here and the few extra feet up in the air has an effect on the air filter life. Some people claim they improve fuel economy as well if the intake is pointing forward. The turbo is helped at speed by the air getting scooped in by the snorkel.

read somewhere that the round type snorkle tops have a cyclonic effect that does a better job of pre-cleaning the air than ram effect ones.
Got to admit that a raised air intake in dusty conditions is a big benefit - far more useful than it is for wading - most people would bottle out of deep water (hopefully) long before the air intake was flooded, but would trash the air filters with dust, and only realise it when the MIL light came on.

round type tops can have dust vents in them, so there is a cyclonic effect. only very basic, tractors used to have a more complex cyclone on a raised air intake including a bowl to catch the dust, its amassing how much they caught.
tractors now have a dyson style cyclone hidden under the bonnet with the dust being drawn away either by a small cowl to the radiator fan or a venturi in the exhaust sucks the dust away out with the fumes.
cleaning the air filter is now a service job rather than a daily task

$100 Shocked

LR paper one is £8

I have a K&N Filter myself, tried made no difference to MPG and the cleaning kit cost more than a LR paper filter, so its never gone back on after my car was serviced a year ago

But on the flip side, K&N refute this http://www.knfilters.com/MAF/massair.htm
saying its scare mongering by dealers wanting to sell their disposable products.

Took out the air box and gave it a good clean. Also hosed out the intake pipe.

oh dear! and yours is petrol too! so it hates contaminates lol When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car

Shocked
So how do you reckon the mud got in there as the level was still below the air box and intake Question

Does the air intake ducting run within the wheel arch or is it protected from a muddy spinning wheel by being outside of the arch Question

I wasn't even at the wading depth as you can see from the picture in the mud pit. Seems the wheels must have flicked a whole lot of mud and water into the intake pipe.

It's actually the diesel engines that would cop it worse due to the much higher compression ratio.

I plan to stay out of deep mud and water at all cost on future runs, the intake pipes are just too flimsy and nowhere near waterproof for this kind of off road driving. I think I will just stick to gravel and sand Laughing

wow, interesting read on the MAF's.. I burned through 3 on my td5 with a snorkel before I decided enough was enough, changed the filter back to paper and all was fine. But it may have been other contaminants getting though somehow.

That box was very dirty indeed, I am actually a little worried that so much crap managed to get down the intake!

Strange that both the LR2 mechanic and the above article would be wrong in stating that the air intake is behind the front fender on the driver's side.

Depends what country you're in when you refer to the "driver's side".

I am worried some of the water may have been sucked into the engine, because it did stall a few times while in the water and there was some blue smoke coming out of the exhaust for a short time after the car was pulled out. I also have higher than usual fuel consumption ever since, even after changing the air filter Sad
