Snorkels aren't only for wading. In Australia they are useful for getting the air intake up out of the dust a bit. The dirt roads can be unbelievably dusty here and the few extra feet up in the air has an effect on the air filter life. Some people claim they improve fuel economy as well if the intake is pointing forward. The turbo is helped at speed by the air getting scooped in by the snorkel. |

read somewhere that the round type snorkle tops have a cyclonic effect that does a better job of pre-cleaning the air than ram effect ones.

round type tops can have dust vents in them, so there is a cyclonic effect. only very basic, tractors used to have a more complex cyclone on a raised air intake including a bowl to catch the dust, its amassing how much they caught.

oh dear! and yours is petrol too! so it hates contaminates lol When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car |

I wasn't even at the wading depth as you can see from the picture in the mud pit. Seems the wheels must have flicked a whole lot of mud and water into the intake pipe.

wow, interesting read on the MAF's.. I burned through 3 on my td5 with a snorkel before I decided enough was enough, changed the filter back to paper and all was fine. But it may have been other contaminants getting though somehow.

Depends what country you're in when you refer to the "driver's side". |

I am worried some of the water may have been sucked into the engine, because it did stall a few times while in the water and there was some blue smoke coming out of the exhaust for a short time after the car was pulled out. I also have higher than usual fuel consumption ever since, even after changing the air filter |
