Diesel in the UK

Can any other UK forum members help me understand why our diesel fuel is now more expensive than all forms of petrol, as well as being the most expensive in Europe? Is there any logic to it at all, or is it just a random way to generate revenue for the Govt., as well as make our transport cost higher than all our competitors?! Confused Life is not a dress rehearsal!

With the smoking ban and everything else that they label "good" being driven out and reducing the governments regular income they have to make their revenue somehow and what better way than to charge people for getting to work!!!!

I suppose we really should be grateful at paying our MP's £26,500 expenses to have a second home in the capital etc etc etc etc.

rip off britain here we come!!

If the government were really serious about reducing CO2 emissions they would tax jet fuel the same as petrol/diesel.

Diesel has become more expensive than the cheapest petrol recently here in Norway also Evil or Very Mad Traditionally we have also considered the prices here to be the most expensive in Europe, and also being an oil producing nation (as the UK), cannot understand why motorists are robbed with such high petrol/diesel tax Shocked . To boot, we have now been threatened with the prices increasing considerably in the near future and all the time the government get richer with the increased revenue from us motorists Big Cry .

If our governments had a fixed tax rate per litre/gallon and not a % based rate, it would be much fairer I guess, but I can’t see that happening until after the revolution....

the chancellor follows the tread, when everybody has petrol cars the diesel was cheaper than petrol, Now when the tread has gone towards sporty TDi hatches and more economical diesels he wasn't making asmuch on petrol so he raised the cost of diesel to rake in more cash. Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

emmmm

emmmm ....... so no logic then really. Maybe the budding anarchists among us should start using red diesel instead; that would be a tad cheaper. Razz Now, which forum member probably has his own supply?!! Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Wink

I seem to recall someone telling me that all leisure craft with diesel engines use red diesel legally, not sure I follow the Govt. logic there, unless it's cos MPs get entertained on 'em!!

Do not feel alone, it is more expensive than petrol in Australia as well. The reasons we are given for this are:

It costs more to produce
There is more demand for it
Our government likes to tax it

Saying that I filled up for $1.35.9 a litre today when petrol was 1.36.9 a litre. However in Australia our petrol can jump around 10c/litre a week where as diesel doesn't move much. The companies here call it the "weekly discount cycle". If we question it too much we risk loosing it, or so they say.

It is bizzare especially as on the continent diesel is cheaper than petrol by quite an amount.

It looks like the UK basically prices diesel to only be benificial to those who put high mileage on their cars every year.

Hey Sievester,

You get the diesel cheaper there in Qld than here in NSW because of the cheaper tax on it.

I am always on that Motormouth website for the cheap prices and do save money that way.

Wonder if the UK and rest of the world have a price watch system as well Thumbs Up

we have a website

www.petrolprices.com

which tells you the cost of fuel in area around your home, There is normally £0.01 pence between petrol stations so its hardly worth going to the other one that saves me 67p as at least for the extra penny i get my Tesco Store vouchers each quarter (normally about £20-£25 in vouchers per month) Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis
