Ok with that out the way before going on any shoot think of the distance your going to work at, for portrait I tend to use my Nikon 50mm f1.4 mm G lens
walkabout = 24-120mm
distance 70-300mm VR+1.4 Tele Converter if necessary
fast moving subject 24-70mm or 70-200mm or 12 -24 mm f2.8 lenses
macro Tamron 90 mm lens
Camera Nikon D300 with battery grip for up to 7/8 frames a second and better balance.

I see you like your fast lens!
Nikon 50mm 1.4 spot on. Why some snobs didn't like the G type I don't understand. Who uses the aperture ring anyway?
I bagged a secondhand AF-S 24-85G ED and use it on my D90. Love it, some distortion but Capture NX2 sorts it.
Love my very old 70-210D, bit short on contrast but very sharp. Needs a little Capture help!

D300 Thumbs Up Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

United Kingdom 2010 Freelander 2 TD4_e GS Manual Stornoway Grey

Practical Photographer recently rated the Sigma 18-200 lense as the best buy budget lens of it's size. It doesn't have the quality of the Nikor equivilent, but cost less than half as much. There was apparently a little arboration (sp..?), at the extremes, but generally a good piece of kit.

Guess what I'm saving for now...... Wink

United Kingdom 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Sumatra Black

I just have the standard 18-55 kit lens on my EOS550D and then I've got a Canon EF 50 mm f/1.8 II prime lens which is a cracker for portrait/group shots.

I have the 50mm prime which was fast enough for me to take decent photos indoors without the flash. Sometimes I do think it just needs to be that wider on a few occasions where I couldn't step back anymore so the 35mm would have been ideal.

I'm waiting to get a 55-300mm next to complement my kit 18-55mm and also one day I'll treat myself to the 10-24mm Bow down 11 SD4 HSE Stornoway Grey / Black Windsor Leather

You can't blame me Big Cry
I'm not the one spending your cash Laughing

Seriously, i've never found it expensive. When i went from film to digital, yes i bought a brand new body. But only cos i was concerned about dust. I've never bought a new lens; always secondhand and i never bother with image stabilsation.
I knew a bloke who bought an old Practika with no light meter for 3 quid, but he understood the colleration between ISO/ASA, shutter and f.stop. Think I paid 5 quid for mine and still got it.
He took some amazing shots with just one 50mm lens.
We are talking a long time ago, but even at just 14 years old, i managed to scrape 5 quid together. I used to buy stuff cheap that wasn't working and fix it.

Therefore, I come to the conclusion that most important bit of kit for photography is the person with their finger on the shutter button Thumbs Up Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Nick,
The below are barrel distortion correction that you can plug into PS lens correction for the 35mm AFS f.18 lens.

∞ tbd
30' (10m)
10' (3m) +2.0
3' (1m) +2.5
1' (0.3m) +3.0

I got them from here http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/35mm-f18.htm

If you use Nikon Capture NX2, all Nikon lens correction values are plugged in Thumbs Up Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.
