I've got a manual with stop/start. I don't hate it and don't switch it off.

Indeed it is. A fiddle for emissions.
A proper stop start is superb. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

England 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 XS Auto Indus Silver

The auto or manual debate will continue as long as this forum does. So, just to add my "bit";
My first FL2 was a manual, and I loved it. Luckily I never had any clutch of dmf problems and it had done over 50K when I sold it. I got used to the strange power lag when going hard from first to second gear and adapted my driving. Then I had a problem, I was given an auto as a curtesy car (td4). For me this was the perfect combination for this vehicle, it just seemed to react better. Anyway, it was over a year later until I decided to change to the SD4, a year in which the manual I had performed superbly and had taken me through the bad snow without a hesitation.
Anyway, I now have the auto (sd4) and still believe it is the right choice (although not as smooth as the td4). The cruise control works as it should instead of just in top gear in a manual. I now just set it and let it do it's stuff.

Right, which is best?
Both are superb, for me the auto just flows better with the car. (maybe I'm just a lazy driver Embarassed)

If you drive in congested cities, as I do, then stop/start makes a big difference to the mpg. with 4.4 miles taking 40 minutes on a Friday, I wouldn't be without it. I have used it for 3 years on my current car with no issues. I had the TD4 for a weekend and found it similar in behaviour. I will report good or bad personal opinion on a long term view once I have a few miles under the belt, the car arrives this month. Try it out and see what you think. As people have indicated you can disable it very easily if you find it annoying.

I noticed the 1st to 2nd gear power trait on the test drive of the FL2. From a personal perspective the other merits of the car outweigh that 'limitation'. However it is something you need to try for yourself and see whether you are comfortable with it. It is not going to bother me. I will, like Wizking, change my pattern to fit in.

Now .........anyone know a good solicitor, I need to see whether we can get a class action together on most of the manufacturers for foisting this 'improper, inferior' start/stop on us. Whistle Never tell me the odds.

Cruise control in a manual works in any gear as long as you're doing more than about 30 mph.

Now then, one step further......... 59 plate td4 GS manual with 40k on the clock or 08 plate with 36k on the clock for virtually same money but the latter is an approved used car at LR dealer. Is the approved warranty a major issue that should influence my decision where both are similar FSH cars etc.

Cheers. E

Also, I currently drive an A4 avant turbo (petrol) Quattro, anybody reckon I will find life with the Freelander a bit boring?
Any comments about reliability and otherwise appreciated.

Two points:

1. My other car is a Mk2 Focus RS with over 300 bhp and I still find the Freelander a pleasure to drive and (even with "only" the lowest powered diesel engine) the Freelander never feels underpowered. In fact, I prefer to drive the Freelander!

2. Virtually flawless relaibility from my 2011 Freelander in nearly 16 months and over 52,000 miles too Thumbs Up

diesel is diesel, adding a few extra cleaning agents, wont make your car more powerful or clean your engine At work

What I was trying to say was that even with the 150bhp engine (as opposed to 190) it never feels underpowered.
