Arctic Ice Melt = Cold UK winter?

Heard on the news yesterday that the amount of ice that has melted in the Arctic has broken all records. Beating the previous record by an area larger than the state of Texas.

Scientists are now saying it is possible this could lead to cold harsh winters for the UK and northern Europe. Now as much as I might want it to snow and deploy those infamous tyres whose various names should not be uttered for fear of breaching the forum blacklist, my money is firmly on a mild winter again.

As much as I would like to be wrong, I am backing another boring and very mild winter like last year. Still, one never knows and one of my colleagues in his BMW 1 series will be the first in the queue for a lift if it does snow badly.

Here is an article on the subject (and no, I am not a Guardian reader): http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2012...ter-europe LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Well, could be some truth in it. We've already had quite a few large flocks of geese flying south over us which is about 6 - 8 weeks earlier than they normally do. ______________________

I agree D99, I am just over the border in Lancashire, plants are still waiting for the start of Summer!

I am a little sceptical, well more than a little, about all the global warming saga, there are way too many variables for us, or scientists to comprehend, they seem to jump on one set of data and go for it, telling us the world will be flooded in 50 years blah blah blah.
They dont seem to take into account the weight of ice on continents, it melts and flows into the sea, the continent is less heavy so rises up, this causes problems elsewhere, all the plates moving etc. This process has been going on for millenia and man wont stop it, slow it down, or rather sceptically, speed it up, I think we are punching above our weight with mother nature. That said, I am no scientist, I have another 40ish years if I'm lucky so I will just make the best of it. Thumbs Up

By the way D99, a few of us are meeting up for a photography day in the lakes, if you fancy catching up with us there are some details here.

Some snow would be good this winter

History seems to say we had an ice age many many centuries back...woolly mammoths roamed these shores...then it warmed up...was that the fault of man or a natural occurence?

This is exactly the way i see it. Man isnt causing this but we may be speeding it up. Its just a big cycle.

I found the below report guys and to be fair it is quite a measured and thorough report. Unlike that James Madden guy who constantly predicts snowmageddon Laughing

You may get bored with some of it so you can just scroll down to the conclusion. 31st October will be a more thorough update apparently but I am still favouring a boring and mild winter like the last one.

Indeed. They also claimed that 2010 winter would be very mild and it was extremely cold in the end. I just hope we don't get another boring mild winter like last time. Only February brought decent snow followed by a small outburst in April which was weird. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby
