Was dead simple and looks the biz!

Cheers all for your input Thumbs Up

Key barriers for my installation;

Retaining clips for upper trim
- I removed the dash a totally of 3 times during this installation. On each removal I lost a clip into the retaining hole. I would advise to have som spares of these...
Retention of TomTom within cubby hole
- Used 3M tape located around the edge of the cubby hole. There is not enough material here to get good retention and on my first attempt, the top of the unit was not stuck fully against all sides. I would advise if possible to make a thin perspex plate to fix here based on the dimensions of the original cubby retention
Earth Bolt location
- I eventually removed the entire glove box to locate this, there are 2 bolts above inside the glove box. the one at the back is attached to the body and has a standard hex nut. All others are torx type so require a full set of torx drivers to access.

Also used plenty of tie-wraps to keep the wires from straying and rubbing...

Much thanks to kitchener, donny and taztastic for their input and in giving me enough confidence to do this to my 2 week old car Bow down 2012 DISCOVERY 4 GS AUTO ORKNEY GREY

Thanks Donny, first time I've done anything like this on a brand new car...

This must be the sole best investment any Freelander 2 GS/S owner could make. Once i can save some cash the next thing to go in is full leather refit Wink 2012 DISCOVERY 4 GS AUTO ORKNEY GREY

I didn't know it got that dark at 8.09pm Exclamation Glad you found it straight forward . I've waited 3 years to put one in, although never managed to find one which had this good a fit.

OK, so today the tape gave way and the TomTom fell into the cubby...

So I made a brace by placing a moulded piece of plastic into the cubby side retaining slots and gaffer taped it together at the ends to make a spring. That baby ain't going anywhere! Thumbs Up 2012 DISCOVERY 4 GS AUTO ORKNEY GREY

For others who may look to do this mod:
I used 3M 4941P VHB foam tape on mine and it has not budged. I got it from a mate but you can easily pick it up online (Amazon etc). It has some thickness and foam squiggyness so helps take up the slight unevenness from tomtom to cubby surround.

Just fitted mine. All sorted and working until the crimp connection on the fuse bypass came undone. Now reconnected more securely and tucked out of way. Things I've noted:
I used Halfords ds tape, pressed well down. Not much purchase but seems solid so far although might not survive a poke with a sharp child. Put some parcel tape over the corners for extra security. If that doesn't work Airfix glue might do it.
TomTom website a bit wierd - took several attempts to download the Windows software (screen icon shortcut still doesn't work), and only loaded half the software onto the satnav. Let me load the rest today. I was a bit concerned when it told me I had a few meg to spare and then proceeded to download 2 gig of maps, but again this seems to have been a glitch.
No problems dismantling dash - amazed how simply it came away.
Looks really good. Many thanks for the how-to guides above.

Mod - this seems a very popular thread - should it be made sticky?

in my opinion the problem is the slight tilt of the device, so somehow you need to anchor it at the top. Will post some pics in a bit that will hopefully show my solution... 2012 DISCOVERY 4 GS AUTO ORKNEY GREY

In this picture you can see the moulded bracket thingy that I found in my garage and broke in half to form a brace. Note that I have raised the suction lever upwards which I used to secure the upper part of the device:

In this picture you can see that as I wrap tape around the brace, it gets tighter and forces pressure down onto the TomTom. As a final securing point I wrapped more tape around the sucker so that it secures the top of the device as well:

You can also see the DS tape in this picture which holds the front of the TomTom against the cubby hole as an additional grip.

It looks a bit untidy from behind, but from the front its tighter than a nat's chuff Wink 2012 DISCOVERY 4 GS AUTO ORKNEY GREY

Certainly belt and braces! I took the mount off mine to make it lighter and, hopefully, less likely to unstick. If others have problems here you may be able to market your device!
