Is the fuel tank smaller in the SD4?

Not long ago my old FL1 was in for a service and a minor repair but they kept it for about a week and I got a MY10 manual FL2 as a courtesy car.

I put £70 worth of diesel in at Morrisons at the same prices as today (give or take a couple of pence) and it only just reached 3/4 of a tank and the computer claimed about 420 miles until empty.

I put £70 in the SD4 and it nearly filled it but the computer claimed a mere 370 miles until empty.

Any thoughts? 60 plate SD4 XS, Stornoway Grey, Arm rest pack

Both tanks have a stated capacity of 68 litres.

Manual FL2 has an official combined fuel consumption of 45.6 mpg, Auto FL2 has an official combined consumption of 40 .4 mpg. Even allowing for the fact that the official figures are pretty much unachievable in normal driving the manual TD4 will usually still return a better consumption rate than an auto SD4/TD4. Though I'm sure someone will be along shortly to say they get better figures from their auto!!!

It was more the fill up cost than MPG that confused me. Price of fuel is the same as near as makes no difference and the £70 almost filled the SD4 which it failed to do in the MY10 manual courtesy car.

425 miles stated with 3/4 tank in manual and 370 stated with needle between 3/4 and full on the SD4. 60 plate SD4 XS, Stornoway Grey, Arm rest pack

The 425 and 370 figures are not very good indicators of how much there is left in the tank. They simply indicate how far you can get given the recent driving conditions/technique. If you drive with a heavy left foot for a while the range will drop but if you then drive very frugally you can actually watch the range increase as if you were manufacturing fuel! This is because the calculations are all about averages over a period of time. John

The computer works on the mpg average. So if you have been doing 40mpg on a longer run it will at first show a longer available distance than if you've been doing 27mpg in town (more likely on a loan car). If you reset the computer to zero, you will find the distance remaining will usually go UP as the engine warms up and mpg average increases. Also, the computer can take a while to settle down after a fill up, with the mpg varying quite drastically (I once managed to hit 100mpg average!) and the available distance will vary accordingly. It's NOT a measure of fuel in tank, just of how long the computer "thinks" you can travel in your current driving style.

edit: Beat me to it there John!

Yep was going to echo the same, probably driving style, especially if you are not use to the auto. Also it might of been a 2wd version so possibly even better mpg.

@Past Master only 100mpg? I had this once...

Thumbs Up Shame it doesn't stay like that or I would have a 3000 mile range, would be very handy indeed!!
