Reading all about DPFs and that all new diesel LRs were fitted but not good if you only did short journeys. So a thought, you're a farmer with a new Defender to potter around your fields (short trips unless you're Chicken George with a vast estate!). Now, you're in the middle of cutting silage or combining or baling and the filter is full. Assume you have to stop everything and take the vehicle to the nearest decent road for a prolonged fast run and/or visit the local LR dealer. What a load of bullocks.  11 GS Bali Blue

Why not remove it in a manner that it is easy to re-fit come MOT time???

DPF's actually regenerate by a burn off process if the exhaust temp reaches a certain temp. This means that as long as the car is driven from time to time in a reasonable manner it will never fill.
The temps required are normally around 6-700 degrees which is 15-20 mins solid at around 2300 rpm without lifting of or coasting or at least very little lift off.
Its actually a simple process that just requires thought. The trouble is that dealers don't often explain how to prevent DPF's filling up in the first place.
Stop starts and sudden acceleration , booting flat out at roundabouts tends to create more soot to fill the DPF.
Regeneration is where more fuel is used to create higher temp in the filter to burn off the soot or a chemical, in the case of add blue, ( Pig P s ) is ammonia and reacts with nitrogen dioxides and in the burn process nutrulizes the gases by NOX2 by 75%
Most DPF issues are caused by carp sensors that are measuring the balance of pressure between the input and out put of the DPF known as an exhaust Differential pressure sensor.

I take it my car isn't fitted with a DPF as 95% of my journeys are short stop/starts and 100% of them involve booting it at roundabouts, hence the 26mpg

Seems a bit of a s t thing to have fitted like, mind you it's probabily on purpose so you have to keep taking it back to the main dealer to get fixed.

Thanks for that info oldgeezer. Apparently there was a supplement leaflet floating about from some dealers giving more info on the DPF cleaning but not around my way.
