United Kingdom 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Auto Fuji White

I have just changed a TD4 manual to an SD4 Auto.

The SD4 has a lot more get up and go than the TD4, the auto box is not as smooth as I think it should be. This could just be me!

My TD4 did roughly 35MPG getting 37 every now and again
The SD4 is doing 34 MPG, thought it might be a bit better than this cos on paper it says its better than the 07 TD4 that I had.

Actual figures above, OBD is usually 2 mpg better than actual. Usually over 450 miles on a tank full

Dunk, I am now confused! I understood the SD4 is available in auto only as the manual box/clutch/DMF combo cannot take the increased power of the SD4 engine.
Bob

Bob,

I remember when given the keys I was told it was an uprated engine so assumed, quite possibly by mistake it seems, that it was the higher output engine.......maybe it was a TD4 but it went damn well compared to mine which had 70k on it at the time, it felt so quiet, torquey and refined in direct comparison. Possibly mine was well past it's best and the loan car was just much nicer because of it being virtually new? I thought it was a great drive.......if I misled the OP, then apologies and I need a remap Laughing

Not misled, I just need a "real-world" opinion not a Gaydon-based one! Laughing

Wales 2014 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto Sumatra Black

Changed my td4 for Sd4 xs in april this year , Big differance , much better response smoother feel, does tend to hang on to the lower gears a fair bit if you get a bit heavy footed ,other nice touches, leather steering wheel, still not sure of the seats (might just have worn the old ones in to fit like "a glove")

As for fuel consumption did round trip from North Wales to Southampton to Milton keens and back all on 1 fill
think it worked out 39.something, and was not hanging about either and that was with less than 2,000 miles on the clock

around town about 36 to 38mpg longer bits on motorways getting just over 41 mpg
(no caravan towing allowed ) Just small stock trailer Sheep Sheep Thumbs Up

Yes sd4 as auto only (or so I was told ) Wales
Were the mud is thicker, and the ruts are deeper.
(And we have the water to wash it off, and more on the way..! )
Sd4 and chrome Ar*e piece, Auto box for best fun
09 Xs Gone
12 xs Gone
HSE with Leather seats and 4 years warrenty.. staying for now !

Why buy an SD4 over a TD4? The difference in tax is less than a tank of diesel and the insurance probably no more than 3 tanks of diesel. It really is worth the extra based in the posts above and my own experience.

Hmm...

BigAlf, AndyS,

Not a lot of difference at all by the looks of it. £60 maximum by my calcs (HSE Td4Man - Sd4Auto) What's that just over ½ a tank of fuel? Thumbs Up

Road tax:
TD4 Man = 165 = £170
TD4 Auto = 185 = £215
SD4 Auto = 185 = £215

Insurance (natwest specific prices Laughing ):
TD4 Man HSE = £242
TD4 Auto HSE = £246
SD4 Auto HSE = £257

My current car is £215 tax and £330 insurance, so a worst-case net save of £70 p.a.

"I have just changed a TD4 manual to an SD4 Auto.

A TD4 auto always feels lot quicker than a manual TD4 anyway and on paper the auto is quicker than the manual so difficult to compare going from a manual to SD4 auto

To be honest when I have had a loan manual TD4's many times I question how people could put up with them so slow off the mark & slow to pick up and needs loads of gear changing.

My TD4 auto seems to perform very well indeed and every SD4 I have had as a loaner has been less refined and horrid auto box. My auto box is silk smooth .

Thanks Natwest, you clarify my point precisely. The difference is so small as to be insignificant. In my case the tax was 215 and the insurance about £380.

2011 Freelander 2 SD4 GS Auto Fuji White

I have a SD4 GS, and driven a TD4 auto loaner. The 40 less PS in TD4 didn't make much difference to pulling power, but it was noticeably noisier. Having said that, I also had a SD4 HSE on loan (with windsor leather seats - very nice indeed) - which felt much more refined and quieter. So either sound dampening is better in HSE vs GS, or I've its pot luck how well put together your engine is or they put the better quality engines in HSEs and leave the left overs for GS.

Our normal driving gets around 300-350 miles to a tank, but on clear motorway cruising at speed limits I've seen almost 600. 'I have heard' even with a heavy right foot (i.e. Dartford to Heathrow via M25; ~60miles in 40 minutes) the range indicator might suggests it can do close to 500 miles to a tank.

I settled on SD4 over TD4 because our last car was similar size/weight (Vauxhall Antara - whats that I hear you ask Smile ) only had 147hp and did struggle sometimes to get up to speed - although its probably more to do with its crappy 4speed auto gear box and much lower torque output.

OldGeezer

Don't forget our older autos were always faster than the manuals Very Happy
And later versions dropped the bhp by 10 Rolling with laughter

So given the marginal increase in power (20bhp) of a well bedded in 2008 auto a new tight SD4 might not seem such an issue. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

2013 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto Santorini Black

agree the td4 manual (2010) seems waaaay slower than the equivalent auto.
Horrible flat spot/turbo lag between gear changes. may be deliberately mapped in to preserve clutch/dmf on the manual - but whatever the reason... an auto is the only way to go. (Coming) 2016 RR Evoque td4 180 HSE Dynamc
(Going) 2013 TD4 GS Auto - Santorini Black with black leather. Cold Climate, UK Lighting & Armrest Packs. Privacy Glass. LR Rubber Mats. Full size spare.
60 000 miles averaging 35mpg

(Gone) 2010 TD4 Manual GS - Stornoway Grey. Sold at 3yrs old & 64k miles. Final average consumption 39.2mpg.
