Auto reversing sensors and boat launching

I recently purchased a 2010 auto Freelander, salesman said the car would auto detect the trailer and disable reversing sensors when reversing trailer to launch a boat. Unfortunately to launch a boat you first need to remove the trailer light board and when I do this the continuous tone from the reversing sensors sensing the trailer is annoying, painful to the ears and very distracting. Salesman should have said the vehicle will detect the trailer electrics not the trailer!

I don't have the switch on the dash to turn off the sensors and I don't really want to keep the trailer lights connected and put them in the boot at every launch, can anyone suggest a solution please?

A spare plug with a bulb or resistor wired onto it, plug it in instead of the lightboard?

Do the trailer lights need to be on, in order for the car to know its towing? or does it sense some other wires? At work

Ah just ignore it man. How long does it take to back a boat into the water? 30-90 seconds? Turn the radio up or something!

(you've clearly never lamped bunnies in a field full of thistles with front parking sensors!)

(also with my FL2 the electrics hadn't been told there was a trailer socket so they bleeped whenever you had it in reverse - I assumed that was supposed to happen until I got a Disco that was set up properly!)

Never had an issue with reversing sensors beep myself, shove some ear defenders on if a little beep is so annoying Rolling Eyes

Can't see the sales man to be at fault, anyone one with a little common sense will be able to work out its the electrics been plugged in that tells the car a trailers attached, how exactly did you think it would know otherwise Question

I know your problem. I overcame this by buying a cheap halfords lighting board cut it down to about 2 foot refitted the lights to it and shortend the cable.
Now when I drop the boat in the water i just plug in the adapted board in the boot and off I go. Just wanted to mention though on some of the launches I use there is a downward slope so I just free wheel down the slop with foot on brakes this way no bleeping or connectiong of the modified board lol best of luck. Thumbs Up

I presume the car senses the resistance in the trailer light cabling because lights on on or off have no effect. I'll try one of those testers suggested in later posts or wire a plug with a bulb, the resistor idea sounds good but lack knowledge on spec and wiring it.

Many thanks to you and others for some helpful suggestions

(I'll give the earplugs a miss)

Not that this is the only way and LR may be different but the "classic" socket has a microswitch to detect if a trailer has been attached. No clever load sensors or anything like that.

Try plugging in a bare plug, no wires or anything and see if this switches off the beeper/fog lights. Prog rock is cool! Smile
