Here we go again - DPF Full

Her Ladyship has just got back from shopping - poked her head into my study and said:

"I've got that CHECK ENGINE amber warning light on again and the message DPF VOLL".

Just checked and it is not quiet 2yrs since she last experienced this irritating alarm. So tomorrow its a long fast run along the motorway wasting fuel for an hours round trip to the Aqua Centre to see if I can first burn-it back into normal mode, if not, it is a trip to the local LR Clowns of Contrition. How many days will they take? Will they have properly done the work? Whistle

I do believe that that is the tool that the local LR Official Service Centre uses to "cure" all information displayed warning alerts.

Unfortunately they run out of bricks so quickly that it normally takes more than one or more days to fix a simple problem, and even then, with an endless supply of specialist bricks they fail to resolve the problem and so for example, after 4 days of trying to programme in the Front PDCS they default to the time honoured - it's our diagnostic computer not up to the task.

Total Swiss Bol Censored ks - the lot of'em.

Update on DPF Regeneration

This afternoon with the warning message "DPF VOLL" in the Main Message Centre and the amber "REDUCED ENGINE PERFORMANCE" warning light illuminated I drove off for the motorway to follow the Owner's Manual regeneration procedure.

After 21kms (13.1mls) at speeds between 100 to 120kms (63 to 75mph) both the REP amber warning light and the DPF VOLL disappeared. So I take that as the regeneration process worked. Thumbs Up

The OM advises to drive above 48kph (30mph) and for 20 minutes. If that fails try repeating the process at least two more times before contacting your LR Dealer or Service Centre for assistance. I have to say I was not looking forward to running up the motorway 3 times and failing (such a waste of fuel and time) and then going to our local Swiss LR SC for a fix as they consume more time than a Swiss watch but are not so precise or reliable.

Out of interest athelstan, was your speed maintained in 5th or 6th gear Question as some schools of thought say regeneration can be obtained more efficiently at 2-2500rpm.
Should I ever need to do it with my 'Auto' perhaps I should use 'Command shift' to hold the gear Exclamation

EDIT: I completely missed your message in the small font, so the official instruction just bases it on speed and time. Thumbs Up

I accelerated hard through the gear box to get onto and along the motorway to clear traffic, but once up to cruising speed her FL2 remained in 6th gear. At 120kms that registers as around 1,900rpm with her engine/gear box combo.

I think it was Alex who remarked "drive a diesel like you've robbed a bank" - I've always done so, but her Ladyship generally drives her FL2 as though she's in a funeral procession Crying or Very sad

Estonia 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Tambora Flame

I used to have the same issue constantly with my 07 Freelander 2 SE but I had the DPF removed and the car's brain tweaked so that it doesn't notice that the DPF is removed and it won't go into reduced engine performance mode. Now I don't have to do the regeneration trips on the motorway to clean the DPF filter. I had to do them at least 3 times a week which was absurd and a local Land Rover technician told me that the most efficient speed for the regeneration process to work is if you are driving with the 3rd gear at speeds of 70-75 km an hour (the engine rev's had to be over 2500 rpm). He recommended keeping it at 72 km/h. It used to do the trick but still I decided to get rid of the DPF filter altogether. 2007 FL2 TD4 Tambora Flame

Hi Arrjo! I am curious about how you outwitted the car's ECU. Did you do a re-map or fitted a box? Thanks and all the best for the northern neighbour Wink

From what I know, Arrjo, having a MY2007 car, has a different ECU than yours.
I have a vague impression that that ECU is easier to fool...

Hi!
I did a re-map to the car's ECU in a workshop that removes DPF filters from cars. They usually do Audis and other German brands and when I took my FL2 there, it was the first Freelander 2 they had done so they weren't sure if the ECU re-mapping would work. Since I took it there then I asked them to tune the car's performance as well with the new software.
At first the ECU re-mapping didn't work. It caused my car to go into reduced engine performance mode without anything showing on the dashboard. The car was just super-slow but no warning light came on to tell me that.
So I took it back to the guys and told them that this new software doesn't work, so they used some different software and it worked great - the car has more power, it doesn't go into limp mode and I've had the new software for 3 months now and not a single fault has emerged.
I just did a 6300 km road trip to Croatia with the car with 4 people in it and a full laden Ski-Box on the roof and the average fuel consumption was 8,9 l/km and the extra power the car has was useful when overtaking. Plus I didn't have to worry about the DPF Full sign popping up and putting the car in limp mode. 2007 FL2 TD4 Tambora Flame

I got fed up with this because its just stupid. You know when you get the message you need to try and regenerate the DPF but by the time you get to the motorway its always too late and your in limp mode.

So I decided to buy one of those OBD-II bluetooth dongles from the internet and now whenever it happens I can reset the message and get out of limp mode. Which is all the dealer ever did anyway... that and charge me for putting the special DPF cleaning fluid in the fuel tank to make the fuel burn at a higher temperature to help with cleaning.

I'd love to remove the damn DPF but here in Switzerland it just isnt possible Big Cry

But i would recommend the BT ODB-II things from ebay... even the cheapy ones seem to do the trick.

Take a road-trip to Estonia and get the DPF removed Wink
I'm pretty sure that they even do it in Austria or Germany, which is a LOT closer to you Smile

Arrjo,

the problem isn't getting it done, the problem is getting it done and getting away with it. The Swiss can be funny about these things sometimes.

You won't get away with it:
Because your exhaust gas is tested every 2yrs by your servicing garage and then you get that "exhaust" certificate sticker slapped on your screen usually at the rear. No valid sticker and you'll face a hefty fine plus an immediate test from Plod.

Plus depending on which Kantone you live in your FL2 will have to pass it's exhaust gas test as part of it's vehicle "Prufung" every 3yrs, but in our Kantone the waiting time for the MOT is currently circa 5yrs.

Ok, then I guess there's only the official way to deal with it - let your LR dealer replace the old DPF unit with a new one. I guess that'll be crazy expensive.
Land Rover have really made a total cock-up by programming the cars to go into limp mode when the DPF is full. They're supposed to be "go-anywhere vehicles". What happens if the car decides to start limping in the jungle where it's not possible to drive at a steady 72 km/h at third gear? 2007 FL2 TD4 Tambora Flame
