Thanks for the detailed info, anyone got an idea how you can get a static overload on a pinion bearing attached to an automatic gearbox? Just thinking out loud, maybe front wheels spinning, Haldex locks up and transfers all power to stationary rear wheels?, suddenly 160bhp hits undersized pinion. Or does "static overload" mean that the pinion bearings were badly shimed, causing to much preload on the pinion bearings? In my limited experience the pinion gear normally fails long before the bearings, and then the nose bearing first, OK most of the diffs I have rebuilt are attached to electric motors (forklifts). I have what appears to be the same problem, but from the front of my car. Very audible to driver, not so to passenger. It is speed not rev dependant and sounds like a low level torbine running up as you ncrease speed. Turning the wheel to the right increases the volume. All wheel bearings and bushes checked. 2007 TD4 SE Manual Santrini Black |

Hope the £1750.00 is a misprint. £175.00 would seem a more reasonable cost to me. Can you confirm please? Bill Turner. Life Honorary Member of Wallasey Motor Club. Licenced MSA Radio Operator for 35+ years. Rallying is the only sport. |

Had this noise on my 2011 61- SD4 GS at 4000 miles. Main Dealer changed diff bearing yesterday under warranty. Cost on paperwork I had to sign £400ish+ VAT. Drove it home accompanied by the same or even louder droning!

My 45000 mile 2010 TD4-e goes in next week to replace a suspected faulty rear wheel bearing under warranty. If it transpires that the diff is the problem the dealer has the 'repair kit of parts' in stock. |

Re the noisy rear diff. If you whinge enough, The dealer will reduce the cost. It is an inherent problem which apparently is due to the way the on-board computer is set up. may be worth asking your dealer to check the setup prior to the fault showing up when next in for a service or as a precautionary measure. |

Car came back lunchtime with new diff and old noise still! They left a note in it saying there was slight acceptable tyre noise.
