2008 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Rimini Red

I agree with you JP, wheel bearings are cheaper to solve than diff problems; had the old beast on a ramp recently, (the car not the wife) and mine is a noisy diff. I am also lucky in that I can access a press as well. All I need to do now is find out the cost of the bits Bazza Boy posted.
Still not happy that this a know problem and not rectified by the manufacturer Sad

Thanks for the detailed info, anyone got an idea how you can get a static overload on a pinion bearing attached to an automatic gearbox? Just thinking out loud, maybe front wheels spinning, Haldex locks up and transfers all power to stationary rear wheels?, suddenly 160bhp hits undersized pinion.

Or does "static overload" mean that the pinion bearings were badly shimed, causing to much preload on the pinion bearings?
In my limited experience the pinion gear normally fails long before the bearings, and then the nose bearing first, OK most of the diffs I have rebuilt are attached to electric motors (forklifts). Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

Hi all
Back to the pinion bearing on the Freelander rear duff diff . I found this site www.brit-cars.co.uk
Cost of all the bits bro Bazzer Boy listed = £47.28 + postage and VAT (about £68 ish)
Labour to do the job - priceless! I reckon about 5 hours, 4 cups of coffee, a pee break and 3 bandaids.
Or
Take it to a LandRover dealer - HOW MUCH??????

Same But From Front End

I have what appears to be the same problem, but from the front of my car. Very audible to driver, not so to passenger. It is speed not rev dependant and sounds like a low level torbine running up as you ncrease speed. Turning the wheel to the right increases the volume. All wheel bearings and bushes checked. 2007 TD4 SE Manual Santrini Black

Hi Peasemold
Sound like a constant velocity joint to me!
Try jacking the car up, turning the wheels fully to the right and spinning the right hand wheel.
Hope this helps.

Check the rear wheel bearing, - its a lot cheaper then a new diff !
( had to have my n/s/r done a 32,000 miles) only had a small amount of play in it and the noise humming / rumbling /drumming sound was bad at motorway speeds.
It cost approx £1750.00 to have it done, You need a press to remove and fit the new one !!

Hope the £1750.00 is a misprint. £175.00 would seem a more reasonable cost to me. Can you confirm please?

Sorry it was 175 pound to replace the rear wheel bearing Thumbs Up
The noise on the front could be a cv. Joint , but I would still say (nsf) wheel bearing. When turning you load the bearing
A lot more, the cv doesn't take much side load !

Astra's a few years back had the same noise - with no bearing play , when the hub bearing was replaced Thumbs Up
It sort it out .
All the best.

Had this noise on my 2011 61- SD4 GS at 4000 miles. Main Dealer changed diff bearing yesterday under warranty. Cost on paperwork I had to sign £400ish+ VAT. Drove it home accompanied by the same or even louder droning!
Oooo! they said, can you make an appointment and come in again?
This is worrying as you would have hoped that as it is apparently a well known fault LR would have fixed it by now.

Anyone got a good way of getting DAB radio yet?

My 45000 mile 2010 TD4-e goes in next week to replace a suspected faulty rear wheel bearing under warranty. If it transpires that the diff is the problem the dealer has the 'repair kit of parts' in stock.

Re the noisy rear diff. If you whinge enough, The dealer will reduce the cost. It is an inherent problem which apparently is due to the way the on-board computer is set up. may be worth asking your dealer to check the setup prior to the fault showing up when next in for a service or as a precautionary measure.

Re- earlier post about whining from rear axle area
Went back yesterday and dealers technician said that they have to do the bearing whatever, despite the fact that the mod. was fitted from new. LR won't let them proceed to the next stage until this cheap(!) repair is tried. He told me they found no noises with Chassis Ears and he wondered if it is the tyres, but thought that as noise is present at low road speed it can't be that. Today they are trying wheels from a loan car with Pirellis, mine are Goodyear Wranglers.

Saga of noise from back axle

Car came back lunchtime with new diff and old noise still! They left a note in it saying there was slight acceptable tyre noise.
Have just come back from our local independent who agreed there is a noise that cannot be termed "acceptable" and their electronic listening device suggested it was the bearing that was changed last week.
I asked main dealer what next? Do I go to LR direct? Which threw them into a panic.
Bring it in again was the response. I have a business to run and never lost a day through th mundane Zafira I ran for nearly eight years.
My patience is wearing a bit.
