Has anyone bothered with DRL's?

These aren't my cup of tea but I see many cars fitted with aftermarket DRL's and some look naff. I just wonder if there are any FL2 owners on this site that have bothered or what opinions are generally. IMO, they would look out of place on the FL2 but what are your thoughts? LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

I hate the bloody things! I want to know why they don't put the rear sidelights on aswell? I see quite alot a german staff cars driving around in the rain with just dtrl's and no rear lights! Really grinds my gears

Think they're coming to the MY13 from what I've heard.

I've seen one go around Warwickshire with the zebra taped lights.

Probably the same shape as the current ones so could be upgraded I guess... Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual MY11 - 61REG Stratstone Mayfair

i was going to look into fitting some, but then looked at front bumper and realised there isn't really anywhere they would sit nice, so changed my mind.

And yes they should but rears on as well...IDIOTS

Another nail in the coffin of visibility for other road users, particularly cyclists and pedestrians.

On balance though, it's probably not a bad idea. However, I can imagine that, come MOT time, they aren't going to be cheap to replace the entire units when individual LEDs pack up. I really shudder to think of the cost of ones where they are built into the headlamps, Audi style Shocked

Would I add them as an aftermarket fitment? Absolutely no way. Aftermarket ones are usually a very poor relation in terms of power output and it all looks very "Halfords".

I changed the sidelights for LED's and they look absolutely superb, okay so Ii have to put the sidelights on for them to work but at least I get the rear lights on unlike all over DRL type lights. Now - 2017 BMW X3 M Sport Carbon Black

Never seen the point of sidelights. Headlights should be either on or off when driving - giving people the option to drive at night with sidelights is more dangerous than driving without lights on a sunny day (DRL). Sidelights should be set so that they can only be used when the car is at a standstill. If it moves off the headlights should come on and stay on.

It will be interesting to see what the facelift FL2 has for DRLs (if it has them). I think the aftermarket DRLs look pretty naff on any car

With Richardk commenting on sidelights being automatically turned off when moving, perhaps the same can be done for Rear Fog Lights Evil or Very Mad why do drivers think that the conditions are so bad that they need them on yet they are still batting along in the fog or spray at 70+ Rear Fogs should be made to turn off at 40 or 50 at most Evil or Very Mad if they can still do these speeds then the conditions don't warrant them being on Twisted Evil

Personally I think DRLs are a brilliant idea (didn't Volvo start it all decades ago Whistle ) As all modern cars will have to have them fitted in future I thought I would update my FL2 as part of the retuned nose and ar$e project. There isn't anywhere to mount aftermarket DRLs without looking naff (IMO), so I converted my fog lights to dual function fog / DRL by inserting a ring of LEDs into the foglight lense, allowing the light to be used for both functions without altering the appearance of the car. I also fitted a relay to switch them off when the headlights or side lights are switched on, so the automatic lights are not a problem working in conjunction with the DRLs - no dazzle at night.

I am really pleased with the result and often get asked how I managed to do it. Pics are in my gallery if anyone is interested. Cheers,
Raz

Canada is the only country to my knowledge to mandate DRLs as a contingency for every vehicle no matter what. My two previous vehicles had DRLs. My old Saab 900 had a very rudimentary system - the headlights and taillights just stayed on all the time. There was absolutely no way to turn them off even if you wanted to! Mr. Green

We got ourselves a brand new Passat that runs on gas for the wife.. and you guys are right, in sweden, its the law that you must have some form of DRL on the car... But only up front? The rear of the car doesnt have any lights on at all... which makes it a pain in the ass knowing if there is someone actually sitting in a car by the side of the road, or, is it just parked up there? As mentioned before, it doesnt help at all in the rain...

My LR2 "factory" DRL's are basically just my xenon dip beam for anyone out there keen to know.

I really cannot see the point of DRL's motorcycles had their headlights on and you could see them easier, now with vehicles having DRL's on most vehicles, the motorcycycle is not so easyily seen. Even now you can still see a car coming before you see the DRL's then if it's a German car they dazzle you as they get closer, now even in London the buses have DRL's now, if you cannot see a bCensored Y great red double decker without having DRL's you really ought to have a white stick.
