poll added Whistle

Not added a option for "no issues" as the question is who is "having", so if they are not there is no need to let the OP know

United Kingdom 2011 Freelander 2 TD4_e XS Manual Santorini Black

My 2011 model has started to develop a little cough when accelerating. It doesnt feel like anything major, just a little stutter, so I was just going to get the dealer to look at it when it goes in for a service in a month or so.

Reading a few of the posts that have appeared on here over the last week or so I am starting to think that it might be the EGR valve (although some have suggested a software update may be a fix) so until it is confirmed I wont answer the poll question.

I see that Wynns do a product that claims to clean out the EGR valve. Has anyone tried it?

Pretty hard to do...
The EGR is a system that connects the intake with the exhaust.
To reach the EGR valve, because of the gas flow, there is no other way than through the exhaust.
So that product, should go from tank through high pressure pump, burning inside cylinder and reach exhaust unaffected in order to do its job of cleaning the EGR.
What can be? Probably some solvent... In this case, quite difficult to not be affected by the burning / detonation inside cylinder...
Or I may be wrong and maybe they found out some miraculous way of cleaning the EGR, other than the traditional way of taking the EGR off and clean it manually ?!....

I haven`t looked it up but I think you raise the engine RPM up to around 2000 / 2500 and then squirt the stuff through the air intake. I think you have to remove the air filter from its housing first.

UPDATE.
Its called Wynns EGR 3.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE
For professional use only: please read full instructions before using Wynn’s EGR3
1) Warm up engine.
2) Remove flexible hose in the air intake system (Fig 1):
a) Situated between the turbocharger/intercooler and the air intake manifold (cleaning of air intake manifold and inlet valves) OR
b) Before turbo charger (cleaning of air intake system before turbo charger) OR
c) Before EGR valve (cleaning EGR valve), depending on which part you want to clean.
Do not spray directly through intercooler

IMPORTANT: When applying Wynn’s EGR3 the engine rpm can increase or decrease and diesel knocking may occur. This is due to the addition of liquid, and the change in the air/fuel ratio.

3) Start Engine, and let run at idle.
4) Spray the product in short intervals of 1 to 2 seconds into the air intake manifold (Fig 2). After each pulverisation the engine rpm may increase or decrease; wait for engine rpm to stabilise before spraying again.
If during application the engine rpm decreases, accelerate a little to avoid stalling of the engine (up to approximately 2000rpm)
If during application the engine rpm increases or diesel knocking occurs, leave engine at idle during application. Do not accelerate!
5) On some vehicles application is easier with the use of the additional extension tube (fig 3)
6) Continue until the 200ml of product in the aerosol is consumed.
7) Let the engine run at idle for 2 minutes
Cool Stop engine and re-connect air intake hose.
9) Start engine and accelerate the engine approximately 5 to 10 times; do not exceed 2500rpm, or drive for 3 to 5 miles.
10) Allow engine to idle again for at least one minute before stopping the engine.

So the product is added to the air stream not through the fuel stream.
OK, no problem, the question remains: how such cleaning product can remain intact after passing the internals of the engine and several hundred degrees of combustion and still be able to clean an EGR valve?

would be nice to know if it's the manuals or autos being affected.

Just in case it,s a characteristic if driving Miss Daisy - difficult in the auto as she won't hang on to too high a gear. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner
