Holwick, County Durham

Hi Folks,

I'm off to spend a week down in a place called Holwick in County Durham. Just a week's holiday.
Anyone familiar with the area? Any suggestions for good roads, places to eat and see?
(staying in a cottage. No caravans will be involved).
Stuart

Weather....

... decent weather? Anything short of a storm is decent this summer.
Mind you I did have 4 days at 28C in Abernethy Forest which was brilliant. very few midges too for some odd reason.

I'm almost tempted to ask if there are any local pottery shops in the area. Only so I know where to avoid (the other half loves such things).

Pottery

You know the misery of getting dragged around pottery shops....Oh the misery.
I'll never understand the attraction.
In the last few years I've come to accept it. It's like giving up on life itself.....

Never had the 'shopping' misery Smile my wife can't stand shopping, jostling around and navigating the aisles, she much prefers the moors, the hills, the countryside walking. In fact she'd rather walk on her own cos when I talk it ruins her peace and quiet Shocked

Hey Stooby,
This is my neck of the woods.
Bowes museum definitely worth a visit- Barnard Castle.
Killhope Lead mining museum
Cowgreen Resevoir and high force.
Food- Rose and crown at Romaldkirk, chippy in middleton is ok too.
Roads- lol no... we have pretty bad bumpy roads round here at the moment after "the flood"... oh actually they were pretty bad before then! If you fancy a bit of off roading there are a few byways in weardale- up and around cowshill... check out the OS people for better instructions. Also may be worth going to Hamsterley Forest for a drive around the forest- walking too... downhill biking if you are brave.
have lots of fun. PM me if there is anything I can do.
MM
Thumbs Up

Pottery shopping

Oh don't get me wrong. She loves the hills etc but for some reason pottery shops are irresistable.
General shopping she hates.

Mighty mildred! thanks for the information. It sounds like there's loads to keep us occupied and well fed.
I'll keep an eye open for FREEL2 stickers driving around..

Top recomendations there. I'm currently in Bishop Auckland area and took the above advice... wow High Force waterfall was stunning after the recent rains...the drives suggested are beautiful and can thoroughly recomend the tea room at Killhope mine (you don't need to pay the admission fee to use the tea room) - great home cooked food there.
