We can be here all day metaphorically pick axing my head in but can anyone say what the difference in boxes is between say the FL2 and the Disco 4 because I am sure someone on here said the Disco has a much better box LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

The D4 has an 8 speed ZF box, compleatly different from the FL 2 box. Gone, 2007 TD4 SE Auto Baltic blue, clear side repeaters, full sized alloy spare.

Even the early Disco 4's and 3's which had the six speed, it was not the same box that is in the Freelander 2 |

I assume then that for whatever reason, the Disco's box cannot be fitted to the FL2. Also, does anyone think that LR might go down the dual clutch auto route at some point? LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Freelander has a transverse engine layout (running right to left) which makes for a more compact car (pioneered by Alex Issigonis in the Mini. The D3/4 and RR have longitudinal engine layouts (front to back). The layout of the engine influences the choice of gearbox, as someone eluded to the Aisin unit is designed for transverse engines and is very compact.

Agree with your observations with 1st and 2nd gear. Also in agreement with power difference. However, my observations are based on comparison of manual 08MY and 11MY.

When I say flappy paddle I mean duel clutch..! most people are putting sudo paddles on to their cars which in my opinion is a good thing - but it is still a traditional torque converter gear box Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints |

I thought there might have been a dual clutch auto in existence that can change without flappy paddles. Works like a normal auto but has dual clutch. Perhaps not then. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Audi/VW/Skoda DSG is a twin clutch, not all models have paddles though. |

Was going to say the paddles are irrelevant - its what happens inside the gear box that distinguishes the two.

Exactly, one of my boys had a new Scirocco, two years ago, if you had the base model no flappy paddles, they were available as standard from the GT up or as an option on the base model. |
