Took my RRS for a service today and they gave me a Full Fat TDV8 Vogue as a loan car - been working out how I can raise enough money to buy one all day - sell caravan, px sport, sell mini, sell kidney......

Went to pick mine up and they asked if I would like to keep the vogue for a while.....

Then I discovered my pride and joy slid off a ramp and it needs to go in the bodyshop.....


What do I do now - they say they will have it looking good as new but I am not happy - creased rear quarter panel from where it came to rest against lift supports and how do I know discs and underside not damaged as the wheels were off

Noooo! When I bought my new 2007 defender it came with transporter damage. Which was repaired without a problem, but the dealer kindly provided me with 2 free services and a range rover courtesy car while it was being repaired!

What! It needed two services while they repaired it  2002 Honda VFR800

The dealer has two types of ramp - one has arms with rubber pads that swing under jacking points

The one used on mine has 2 steel beams that run front to back and were positioned under the metal suspension arms and the car slid off them

Muddy, you need to decide what action you want the dealer to take, and then try to negotiate with them. Remember that if you sell the car you are supposed to disclose whether it's had an accident. Your insurance might also be concerned, although if it's being repaired by a LR dealer probably not.
I'd feel inclined to accept the repair as it's a dealer, but make absolutely sure it "feels right" next time you drive it, with no steering problems, drifting off on cambers etc, and keep an eye out for tyre wear. It seems reasonable that they should throw in a couple of free services or extra warranty or something that's of value to you but won't cost them much. But you need to ask for it.

Having owned 3 garages in the past for 20 years i can assure you its a fairly rare event but one that as a garage owner we dread.
I had this happen 3 times in 35 years in workshops.
It sounds like yours has slid of what's called a "free wheel lift" I suspect it just slid slowly and the damage is purely cosmetic and you would be surprised how gracefully they move.Normally just cosmetic damaged only but still horrendous experience for the garage and yourself.

I have had a car also roll off the end of a 4 poster ramp at full height with the safety blocks in place. The car had only done 600 miles but it wrote if off.

Also had a car slip down in a 2 poster lift from full height ! horrendous experience, very frightening for all ! believe it or not the posts moved outward ! caused by wet sills on rubber pads. Never expected the posts to move outwards but they did ! the car was scrap after that as the 2 poster lift bars went through the doors one side and peeled it open to the roof.

I had a 4.2 jag slide on a free wheel lift and it just slid sideways and caught the rear wind.no underside damage whatsoever.

Most importantly no one was injured. I wish you luck with a resolve. I'm sure if you come to an aggrement with the garage they will be like putty in your hand.

i would be dropping a gentle hint that surely you are not going to charge me for the service after you damaged my car
and if its a main dealer i would try and get a couple of 1/2 day off road tickets l/rover experience i think that is the least they could do to retain you custom by the way was up in driffield the other week nice place
i suppose it could have been a lot worse and fell completely off the ramp causing extensive damaged ask weather thay have replaced or repaired the rear panel i would not have it repaired if it was mine i would tell them to replace the panel  rainy-city

I suggest you just get a straight swap for the Vogue and agreeing not to go to the papers.! Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own!

Give the dealer a chance to fix all the damage, you have a nice car to drive while it gets sorted. If you are not happy with the result, then you can start stomping your feet.

I am in no doubt that he feels badly right now.. but its a mutual respect thing, dont take advantage of him, and he wont do it to you in the future.
