Damn, you made me come to page 3 when I could have gone straight to page 2

3volt, 50mAh, nominal charge would be C/10, so thats 5mA for 16 hour to fully charge it.
Typical current drain is 100uA to maintain capacity of 50mAh, which would mean with continuos usage it would be flat in 500 hours.

Not a very big battery at all  ______________________

Thanks to SIMONT for his write up, it gave me the confidence to fix my keyfob that stopped holding charge.
Bought another battery off Ebay, broke open the case and swapped the battery.
Glued it back together using Loctite Superglue.
All working fine now.

SimonT, Facing the same key fob battery failure problem. However I'm very nervous about opening the case. Can you just tell me (again) how you did that without damaging the circuit board? I can see that there is a small joint inside the key blade slot and around the outside. Basically is this a job for a Stanley knife or a chisel?? Thanks, Phil

Don't be frightened - as if it isn't working it can't get any worse

The fob unit is pretty firmly fastened down and I'd say very water tight.

Take out the emergency key - and I used a heavy duty screw driver in the hole to force the case to crack open - no sure method just brut force

The case opens along the line under the "Land Rover" printed names on the sides.

If you take your time and use care you could probably make a better job of opening it than I did - but in the end it works so

I'd rather a slightly knocked about fob that a bill for £140+

I used a stanley knife and cut in the groove between the front and back of the fob after I removed the emergency key. As Simont said it is a little bit fiddly and also just be carefull when de-soldering the old battery so as not to fry any of the circuit board components. All I can say is just take your time and be patient its worth it. I am no expert but after I finished soldering the new battery in place and just held the 2 parts together and opened and closed the locks to make sure everything was ok before I superglued the 2 sections together. Hope you are succesfull and get the satisfaction that a dealer is not getting any of your hard earned cash.

Thanks SimonT and Dadipiper. Unit safely cracked, new battery carefully soldered in and now waiting for glue to set. (fingers crossed) I'd still have paid good money for a replacement empty case like the ones you can get for older freelanders. Next step is to recharge it. BTW I think one of the battery connections being dry may have been my problem rather than a battery failure as the smaller one didn't look good when I went to desolder it. Thanks again.

My experience mirrored all of yours. Found the battery from $8.14 online. I didn't notice any sort of gasket or sealant on the fob, seriously doubt it's waterproofed like a LR3/Disco3 (LR claims submersible to 75 feet!).

The key also reluctantly snapped back together, no adhesive needed.

I am planning to shortly embark on this repair and I am grateful for all the advice that I have read here....
However with no electronics repair experience, although I do have a fairly basic soldering iron, I suspect that a more precision based tool may be required. Therefore could anyone give me any advice as to what I shall need in this respect to take on this job such as tool type and source and also if materials such as soldering flux etc is required and anything else along these lines.

In my view opening the case is the only difficult bit.
Don't be phased the soldering is very simple.
Unless you soldering iron was designed for plumbing and flux is helpful but most solder has flux in it.
If you have any doubts you can always take it to pieces and then go to Maplins at Junction One Retail Park, Rugby, GB, CV21 1RW where a nice spotty youth will sell you everything you need to do the repair.

Already took a look in Maplins, couldnt find a spotty youth though...
Have now dug out of my tools a soldering iron with a sharp spike tip whichs looks as though it will do the job so in the course of next week will have a go. As someone else has said as my spare key is headed for the bin its a win win situation if it goes wrong anyway.
